What probably happens is the men end up pushing women out of their circles, because they've been raised to fear even being in the presence of one unless it's about sex, lest they be called effeminate. That's probably how most "male-dominated" subjects came to be. And indeed, children don't really have these disparities. Where they do you'll usually find a bunch of complaints about parents and authority figures restricting them.
