Shoving this in people's faces isn't going to help anyone. Like it or not, heterosexual people find homosexual acts repulsive at a visceral level and we're the majority. Flaunting homosexuality like this is only going to turn off folks who would otherwise support them on a theoretical level. Just keep this shit in the bedroom please, we don't need to see this. And for the love of god, leave kids out of it.

My wife sometimes thinks I'm a homophobe, a racist, and a transphobe because I always bitch about shit like this.

Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with gay people, racial minorities, or trans people being represented in the media. What I do have a problem with is when they make it a focal point. Corporations literally do not give two fucks about any of that diversity shit, and only do it because virtue signaling is popular with the left. That's what I take issue with. Even when they don't make it a focal point and put something in on the down low, you can rest assured that the retarded director will talk about that one specific thing for about 15 minutes in a "making of" feature or an interview... About how they wanted to pass it off as just normal and like it was nothing, but how much it meant to them, and how intentional it was, etc... Completely defeating the purpose of their own effort in the process so they can stroke their dicks and virtue signal to the whole world because they didn't do it directly in the movie. Every single fuckinf time.

Similarly, you can't find one single fucking ad on TV for any product that would include a straight while man that isn't doing something stupid. The only time it's acceptable to show a white man in a TV ad nowadays is if they're kissing their black wife, or holding another man's hand, or if they're fat, balding, and doing something intended to be dumb and funny to the audience. And again, you know none of the companies behind that shit give any sort of fucks about diversity; it's all pandering, and that's what makes me violently angry to my core; not the representation (or lack thereof), but the fucking soulless pandering.

Don’t get me started on how men are portrayed in advertisements. Especially fathers.

openly gay teen romance

I'm sorry, were they previously offering us closeted gay teen romances? What a nonsensical description.

What you mean you didn't interpret Monster's Inc as an allegory for map rights? You've got "monsters" living in the "closet" who come out and "scare" children in order to get "energy".

Because that's what every teen boy wants to see - two guys making out. Enjoy your empty theatres Disney.

Why do i have the feeling this is overhyping it and the way China can censor it will be to claim the 2 are friends? If there's a kissing scene of course disney will probably make a mil second one where the chinese can censor.

[–]makesyoudownvote 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

A recent report about a year ago has shown that for Disney censoring for Chinese markets doesn't actually pay off they expected it would. That's part of the reason why Disney has stopped doing it, and begun leaning into the opposite strategy. That's not to say that they won't still do it a bit, but the bad PR they receive for doing so actually hurts their bottom line more than the benefit of legally showing in China.

[–]Alienhunter糞大名 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Chinese markets have essentially locked the west out of access again due to Xi's new policy reforms and a trend to show more Chinese produced content.(There's only so many foreign movies allowed to be screened in the country each year and access is competitive.) Also rampant piracy tends to cut into anything beyond theater profits.

However Disney loses out not just on China but also pretty much the entirety of the Muslim world. Not that the movies are often banned per say but they'll get an R rating equivalent and that sinks a children's movie.

Also I think Disney by playing the culture wars loses out on a lot of potential domestic profits as well. The question is do they make more money by using this as marketing vs the money they lose from alienating large swaths of the domestic and foreign markets?

I've yet to hear a very coherent argument as to why token representation is so important? It's important for kids to see other kids like them? Hmm, kids love stuff like Tom & Jerry does that count as otherkin representation? Or do they literally not gaf and watch whatever they think is interesting.

I personally don't really care about the gay tokenism in these movies but I think it's underlying a problem in the industry where writers seem to think diversity alone is somehow a compelling plot point and they are focused on checking a bunch of corporate boxes rather than making something that is good on its own merits. Disney is pretty much notorious for this and I think it's sucked all the creativity out of their company and they basically just churn out endlessly uninspired content. Marvel movies have become stale and uninteresting and it has nothing to do with the random gay tokenism, and everything to do with poor direction and writing. Star Wars is the same, it's like they are the Squire of Gothos, they nailed the asthestics but understand nothing of the underlying substance and churn out visually appealing but ultimately souless films.

Unfortunately their animated department has also fallen prey to this. It's churning out endless uninspired sequels and safe corporately approved predictably developed films. Gone are the days they'd make something truly artistic like Fantasia. Now let's make yet another princess movie accept the princess has to save the man! (Roll reversal is so uninspired) And to say nothing of them remaking their animated movies as shot for shot live action movies.

Maybe the gay tokenism is their attempt to use the culture war as a way to shut down any criticism of their movies and bully people into feeling the need to go see them? That's about the only reason why I'd think they'd play it up so much in marketing.

You know what? I don’t mind if there is a gay couple on a TV show or a movie. But if that show or movie is intended for children, then it should be rated in a way where the parents can decide whether or not to let their children see it. Because like it or not, it’s not easy to explain homosexuality to children without talking about sex. And it’s also not a good idea to expose a child of homophobic parents to same sex couples. Because if that child is gay, he could be lulled into a false sense of security, come out to his parents, and then either get kicked out of the house or live a few years of misery until he’s allowed to move out at 18.

Furthermore, what is most important is how this storyline will be dealt with. Will the gay teenagers be stereotypical? Will they be obnoxious and demanding? Will those characters be used as a mouthpiece for the writers' activism? Will the homosexuality be shoved down the viewers' throats, and be the only interesting thing about those teenagers? Finally, why should gay people give a crap about this movie anyway? Most gay people do not want to be paraded around and used to spread messages on morality.

I am a gay man. And if I had nieces or nephews, I would be reluctant to let them watch Disney at all if I were babysitting them.

When you were a gay youngster do you think seeing homosexual relationships normalized in the media would have benefited you in any way?

I don't really care about this gay stuff cause straight guys are pretty adverse to taking cock, but the troonery is the one that's sociogenic.

[–]Newzok 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Honestly, anything that goes away from the stereotypes would possibly have helped. As a youngster all I ever really knew of gay people was the femme camp type you always see on TV. And I certainly wasn't one of those. Made for a really confusing, lonely pubery. I never thought role models were important because there weren't any. But I do think they are.

The way trans representation goes I'd rather not see it. Feels hypocritical to say but it's a different kettle of fish. And it seems like recently its less about acceptance and more about confusing people about their identities and selling a political angle. Social contagion notwithstanding...

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't think it would have mattered. I've seen shows with gay characters like South Park and Family when I was a teenager. My parents watched EastEnders when I was a teen, which occasionally I would watch as well out of boredom, and there was a gay storyline on that show. I still wasn't sure if I was gay or not until I was 17.

To be fair, most of the gay characters on the TV were stereotypes when I was growing up. They all had traits that I liked. So I thought there was no way that I could be gay. But I did have feelings towards the same sex starting at 14. Maybe if the gay characters were normal characters I would have benefitted from their representation. But it's hard to know. My parents were never homophobic.

It's really easy to explain sexuality to children without talking about sex. When they are very young, children think in terms of 'falling in love' when they think about relationships, not sexual attraction. I've told my son, since he was quite young, that the majority of men fall in love with women, the majority of women fall in love with men. But there are some men who fall in love with men and some women who fall in live with women. There are also a number of people who can fall in love with either men or women. It was pretty easy for him to accept and is what most parents I know tell their kids.

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Good point. That's how I would explain it to my children if I were to have any. But a lot of people still don't know how to do that. Explain it to the parents first and then the parents can explain it to the children.

[–]INeedSomeTime 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Why is homosexuality somehow harder explain to a kid than heterosexuality they see displayed everywhere? Only in forms of two characters kissing or calling themselves a pair. What makes homosexuality so different?

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Heterosexuality is just so common. Homosexuality occurs in 5% of the population, which admittedly is a big number, but it is still out of the ordinary. So a lot of people don't understand it. If an adult doesn't understand it, he cannot properly explain it to a child. Additionally, when a child sees that two men own a house together and they have the same bedroom, he might wonder why that is the case when it's normal to this child that men marry women.

Sexual orientation is who you are sexually attracted to. Yes, people form relationships for many different reasons, be they financial, a desire to have children, interdependency or just doing what other people are doing. Romance wasn't always a factor in who married whom. But you wouldn't necessarily make a life long commitment to someone if you didn't want to have sex with that person. So yes, heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality all come down to sex. You cannot talk about sex to a child. You can tell the child that his two uncles live together because they love each other the same way his dad and mam love each other. But it is very complex for a lot of people and this requires a lot of thought and patience.

I mean, I'm equally bigoted against PDAs and romance storylines of all kinds. Especially not interested in films aimed at kids (not that I would be likely to see this anyway).

FYI, one of the actresses, Gabrielle Union, is participating in transing her husband's gay teen son.

Well I hope its good. It's quite strange that they're going that way, but it's a subject that is rife for a lot of interesting drama. It'll probably be tastefully done. But my feelers are out for wokeism.

Ohh it'll be a side character. Anyway, interesting enough. It didn't do Lightyear any favours to have a lesbian character(and it's still all I know about that movie) though.

[–]Alienhunter糞大名 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Honestly the plot of lightyear was so bland and uninteresting you could just swap out any of the characters with anyone else and the movie wouldn't have changed one bit. Like they could have had Buzz Lightyear be the Black Lesbian Woman and it wouldn't have changed the plot at all.

This is all great and all but who fucking cares.

My gay teen romance was watching Milena Velba and another woman doing lactation play.

[–]INeedSomeTime 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong here. Been exposed to straight teen romance all time as a teen myself.
