He claimed that he gender swapped the character for story reasons, but we all knew that was a crock of bullshit. The same way a black actor was just "the best person for the job" when it came to casting Death

The thing there is, sometimes that's genuinely true, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury was a fantastic bit of casting. But when the changes are almost exclusively being made in one direction, almost always male to female or white to non white, it casts a fair bit of doubt on that claim. The best actor for the job just so happened to come from the minority that many times? Simple odds would dictate differently.

Have to admit for fictional characters I care less. Some of it might just be some people having some good chemistry or as you say being a perfect fit for the role. Realistically a lot of it is probably for ratings/quotas to make sure they don't get shit for not having enough minorities. Look at that article from the guardian about the England women's team with claims that their lack of diversity would stop girls dreaming. Which was such absolute nonsense. How dare they checks notes choose the best squad with the best players they have available?

When they start messing with historical figures it annoys me. Like Channel 5 making Anne Boleyn black Or that play making Joan of Arc nonbinary. Can't even respect actual people.

Race-swapping real figures definitely annoys me. And they always do it to figures who are popular with the establishment. Hollywood would never allow Hitler to be portrayed by a black actor. Although, not gonna lie, it would be hilarious.

Lol That would be hilarious. Make a series on Mansa Musa but make him white. Use the same excuses as they did for Anne Boleyn and watch them explode. If one is okay the other is too. If not neither are okay.
