They don't typically try to use the brain angle beyond a figurative 'mind' because if you could objectively determine the gender of the brain, it would remove any subjective element, and the entire trans concept is subjective (and arbitrary).
But as usual, they intentionally mix terms anyway. Sex, gender, gender roles, and gender identity are all different things but they act like they're interchangeable from one sentence to the next.
