I never watched One Piece beyond Impel Down ark (and when I did there wasn't yet much more beyond it. Or maybe it still lasted, can't remember), so when relatively recently I found some mentions of Yamato I was confused as fuck, to be honest. Because looks like a girl. Dresses in a way that does NOT make her look not like a girl. People say she's a dude. Wut?

Apparently, there’s a manga panel where she referred to herself as “Kaido’s son.” Some people misinterpreted the panel and thought it meant that she identified as a man, which is why there’s “controversy” around her gender. In actuality, she idolizes a certain male character to the point where she wants to be like him.

It's 1000000 percent a social perception thing than a real gender issue for Yamato. As usual the West misses that point.

Although i think the actual "trans" with passing is the samurai fellow. By all purposes he's closer to a crossdresser though.
