Well lots of this anime really is designed to appeal to typical male sexual ideals so they can sell merch. Plus when you take the Japanese more playful attitudes towards human sexuality that offends puritanical American sensibilities. It's little surprise to me that American nerds who raised in fairly traditionalist gender roll structures that don't fit the standard societal ideals of attractiveness or those same gender rolls take on an identity that is driven by a mix of their unsatisfied urges marriaged with their escapist hobbies.
