I might see or hear a guy make a "lol homos" crack about two guys being bros, but it's almost always a one-off thing and quickly forgotten.

Ehhhhhh...

In 99% of situations the people who'll throw the word "fag" around two close friends won't be women, let me tell you.

One Direction I think, that had some really insane--to the point where the members themselves actually became unpleasantly aware of it--gay shipping going on with its members, and almost all of it from women. And I know that male k-pop groups have to deal with it too, again almost entirely from women.

This is disgusting, but is this really a common thing outside of boy bands and online mlm fandoms?

Its pretty common in tv show fandoms, for example supernatural and sherlock spring to mind.
