This is why you avoid linking your online accounts to yourself if possible. You never know what will fuck you over.

Not only that I've gotten rid of all social media with my identity attached. I had a Facebook for a long time but shoah'd it. The family I had on just used it to argue about politics. Most people on there weren't friends just ghosts of friends. Why would I keep my name on platforms openly hostile to me and my people? Reputation is everything in the working world. Character assasination is the prefered attack on whites today because they know many are living in debt and can't go without a paycheck for too long before their lives start breaking down. I'm going to do everything in my power not to let these people destroy my life or the people I love.

Considering how people will go over things with a fine toothed comb going back decades because you said something mild that upset them is frankly terrifying. Best to avoid giving them any room to doxx. Costing someone their job for comments made that long ago is foul.

Honestly, it's worse than that since that's just "we're GOING to ruin your life out of spite, I'm just looking for a reason to do it"...and more terrifying since it's been done so long it's only a matter of time before it moves to "okay, there is nothing I can ruin your life for? Fine. I'll just lie. It's your word against mine, and who'll take your word for it? You're a [insert claim I made]." (Considering there's as many people who's takeaway from the Depp/Heard trial was "well, maybe we SHOULD get to lie!", that looks imminent.)

It's terrifying. The reason thing freaks me out so much. It's okay to ruin your life when you did a wrongthink, and you did a wrongthink a decade ago so that makes it okay to ruin your life.

These people should just become parking attendants, they'd get off on that tiny amount of power.

Or, have all your social media accounts linked to you set to fully private and have anonymous/throwaway accounts where you get spicy and shitpost and never let the two cross-contaminate.

Separation where possible is the best idea. Always make sure you post on the right accounts in those cases haha.

This was the best thing about TiA being banned from reddit. It was conceivable to find my reddit account for people who knew me, and I was definitely active in TiA holding and sharing some controversial (but mainstream among moderates/reasonables) opinions. Can't be found now :>

That's true. Pretty sure most of us would be cancelled over it and it's def possible for people to find accounts based on other info. Especially if they're as obsessive as these nutters who go back sometimes over a decade. Scary thoughts.

They did us all a favor too, brough many more people over here, where free speech is the way to go.

Amazing how quick companies are to bow to literal whos on Twitter, then again the HR departments practically live on Twitter and social media.

HR departments are increasingly controlled by people who are basically Reddit mods that can function in the real world. You see the same sort of petty power-tripping and ego-boosting games being played out, but with the added bonus that their bans have an actual, lasting effect.

[–]jet199 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

HR depts have pretty much always been like that.

[–]TotoroDeams 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

HR are bitches and not one single HR person is a good person. HR is basically a companies secrety, not so secret police.

Unbelievable, the account that got that guy fired has 60 followers. I hope this backfires on the company.

[–]LyingSpirit472 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

After Ubisoft caved and changed the definition of a villain in Assassin's Creed with a scar on their face after literally only one person- who wasn't even the person in question- complained, 60 followers is like Beyonce complaining.

Proof that in America freedom of speech only exists on paper. Companies should not be allowed to fire employees for what employees say or do outside of work.

[–]Alienhunter糞大名 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Need stronger employment laws for that. It's perfectly legal to fire people for voting for someone you don't like in most states. Granted it's practically impossible to enforce generally speaking if you just lie about it. Which is what happens, but it's not at all healthy for any sort of democratic society to function this way.

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Listen, I think small businesses should have as little government interference as possible, because they have few employees and lots of competitors. But large corporations should not be allowed to fire employees just because of an employee's beliefs. I can understand sacking an employee for stating an opinion publicly if the employee claimed he was speaking on behalf of the company, otherwise the employee should not be sacked

[–]Alienhunter糞大名 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

There's a difference between saying something in uniform on company time and saying something privately with no obvious connection to the company.

Regardless there are few employment protections for people. This is horrible for any democracy since it gives large corporations a huge amount of influence on what can and cannot be said in the public square.

For a healthy democratic society to exist political speech needs to be protected and we cannot allow undue retaliation against legal speech conducted outside of ones employment duties. Should be seen as a violation of a companies civil duties and should have consequences.

This needs to apply to smaller employers to some extent as well but really it's the circumstances that are important to take into consideration. But employees should have legal recourse for undue firings if we want a free and stable society.

If we want an autocracy freedom is optional.

Well said.

More people have to remember about free speech: When you do something to someone over disagreeing with you, then eventually when the pendulum shifts to the other side, you just said it's okay for THEM to do to YOU when they get power.

[–]jet199 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You can certainly have limits on laws, like they only apply to firms which employ 50 people or less.

Certainly some tax laws are already like that.

[–]RedEyedWarriorThe Evil Cishomo 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

As should be the case.

[–]LyingSpirit472 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Heck, even the few protections employees get are covered if the company just lies about it. The manager's a bigot and wants to fire you for being in a protected group? The manager hit on you and was butthurt that you rejected them? As long as they can lie and claim "no, no, we fired them for x, y, and z", they're able to do it [note: EVERY COMPANY makes a file of minor offenses that they can use as an excuse to fire you so that, when they choose to fire you, they can say it's for these reasons so you can't sue.]

Cancel culture is cancer but also stop attention whoring on YouTube.

Most cities are these days. They have their benefits, but I'm trying to get out myself.

For visiting, it has its positive features, or at least it used to. I would never, in 10 million years, want to live there.

Beats me. And that is a good thing, because I don't want to do business with these eejits.
