The funny thing about singular "they" is they still want to be spoken about in "they are" plural not "they is".

It really gets ugly when a reflexive pronoun us necessary. I've heard "themself," which I don't believe has ever been a real word. It's not like a singular "themselves" works very well, though.

I've started collecting examples of awkward abuses of "they" and "them." Some news organizations seem to be defaulting to these pronouns now for broad categories of individuals. It's extremely widespread when referring to unknown people, but even known people of obvious sex are now being tarnished with the "they/them" designation.

This leads to information-destroying headlines like "local vagrant assaults child and their parent." So the vagrant is the kid's sibling... maybe?
