I've long said I identify as "human" because race is a social construct and we are better off not propagating the idea that skin color is at all a relevant attribute in people's lives.

I mean let's be perfectly fair here, some "black people" have white skin, it's called albinoism. So it's not the skin color that is even relevant to the racial identity really. There's no single objective metric you can point to that is a definitive way to identify someone's race. It's not like sex where dimorphism is usually obvious and reproduction capability is a very clear indicator. Racial categories are wholely defined by social attitudes and have almost everything to do with culture and almost nothing to do with any kind of genetic dispositions beyond very surface level appearance based metrics used for judgement. But Americans especially are just so obsessed with the topic. Try telling Americans that loads of Mexicans are white and they'll act like you are an idiot, but it was settled by fucking Spain, of course there's going to be lots of white people there. It just serves as a perfect example how ideas of race aren't at all based on science or ancestry. It's all social positions and perceived differences from that.
