My dog is vegan, not by choice. He has a severe digestive illness where he can't eat meat or animal products without vomiting and the little bugger still begs for my bacon and eggs in the morning.

Lol can't tell if it's satire or insanity. That's what I like

If real this person must have the most sheltered existence ever. Did these people exist back in pre-industrial societies? I bet they did. They must have some kind of hyper empathy problem coupled with utter ignorance about how the world works.

I've always argued that it's more ethical to eat meat than plants. Because plants can't run away.

In my experience most vegans have personality disorders. So it's not just a sheltered existence, they are often also half mad and often lying to manipulate as well.

Jains are very strict vegans, and Jainism is ancient. However, I think veganism, as we know it in the west, is very much a 20th century thing mainly because you have to be fairly food secure before you can voluntarily be selective, and it really is only post-WWII that the food supply in the West has been secure (and post-Green Revolution for the majority of the rest of the world). The elimination of seasonality is an even more recent development in The West, for instance, I can remember having to wait until May/June for strawberries and now you can have fresh strawberries on Christmas Day.

If we were still subject to failing harvests and seasonality, I suspect that there would be very few vegetarians and almost no vegans in The West.

And the interesting thing about Jains is... they live in the region of the world where most of the things you need to be a vegan grow in abundance. It makes sense that such a society would emerge somewhere where there is the option of doing so.

But yep, for the rest of the world and especially the west, the only way to be a strict vegan is to import the majority of your nutrition from the rest of the world. So it requires the globalized transportation and supply networks that they - often, but not always - decry. Eating a cow we grew a town over is better for the environment than importing 10 different beans from all 4 corners of the globe on container ships, airplains, and trucks, I think.

It would be better if western farmers polluted less. When they give the cows central heating and feed them beans from all 4 corners of the globe the benefits of local production is lost.

I agree, I think Veganism is very much a luxury belief.

They did exist pre-industry, usually very sheltered noble classes. Sometimes they get the rude awakening, sometimes not.

Evidence?

You can't say it's too crazy to be real.

[–]TotoroDeams 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Because it hits every single checkbox that would mock vegans?

[–]jet199 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

So no evidence.

And I don't see how it ticks any boxes either. You'll have to elaborate on that.

Seems far closer to what my aunt who hates wildlife documentaries would say and a stereotypical vegan.

That just made me think of those hippies on Futurama who taught a lion to eat tofu.

I can't wait for the mad max times when we can hunt vegans.
