Reddit shut them down.

They didn't do it by closing the sub to posting, instead, they did the death by admin pressure. First it was quarantined for sketchy reasons, then they decided they were going to remove all the admins.

Removing the existing admins, for admins vetted by the Reddit administrators, was too much for the current admins who locked the whole subreddit down thus achieving what spez wanted anyway.

I never liked the subreddit but the chilling effect on political and free speech is glaringly obvious and made me furious.

Reddit over-regulated the sub into uselessness several years ago. There are other related subs, some of which have not gone as far down the same path (for instance Drain_The_Swamp) but they will all wind up in the same state as r/T_D. Some have even been formed as invitation-only subs, though I'm not sure if that has protected them or not. (btw, does saidit allow invitation-only subs?)

TheDonald.win was one attempt to move the community elsewhere, but there are enough dissidents that it's not all going to go one place regardless. Apparently at least one of the original mods is annoyed because TD.w tried to fund itself through ads.
