Nobody wants to admit the obvious. Decades of data and nobody wants to admit the obvious.

Meh, the UK switch back to teaching phonics a few years back because studies showed it is the only method which works.

We had a pretty large minority of people leaving school without being able to read properly before that.

It's a problem everywhere teachers are allowed to decide the way they teach because they always want to be nice and progressive over getting results.

the main problem is the kids have no support from their parents, they won't study and do homework if parents don't make them.

My cousin is a teacher and she says she can always tell when kids have no books at home or not. She gets parents coming in in tears because their kid doesn't want to read but she can't really say to them "if your kid never sees you enjoyed reading and only trying to force it on them of course they are going to fight it."

lol a parent in tears because their kid won't do what they say, the kid should be in tears from a spanking for not learning to read. And yeah though leading by example is best.

She should say it, then find honest work.

teaching phonics...because studies showed it is the only method which works

Didn't know this but I'm not surprised. I also didn't know that schools in the US had switched to a "balanced literacy" approach but at best it sounds like information overload. Phonetic instruction is simple and it gets quick results. All that other stuff kids can learn later on once they have a foundation.

Yeah, using other methods at the same time as phonics actually slows learning.
