70 to 80 birds are having their names changed because it's colonialist to have a human name, presumably in most cases just of the people who first discovered them.

Some birds are named after people who have associations with the past that are exclusionary and harmful, according to the society.

"I was just shocked to realize that we're honouring these people by continuing to call these birds by their names," said Fisher Stephenson, a Mount Royal University student and bird watcher from Cochrane, Alta.

So all 80 are banned after horrible people? I highly doubt that. This is completely retarded.

Conservative Islam Trumps Freedom of Speech; one final example of the advancing neo-dark age in our universities by hfxB0oyARetarded in ThatsRetarded

[–]hfxB0oyARetarded[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

TL;DR - Hamline University of St. Paul, Minnesota has fired an Art History instructor over "hate speech against Islam". The offense? The instructor offered an optional breakout session to discuss a historical, Islamic made painting that depicts the prophet Muhammad. A conservative Muslim student got his or her knickers in a knot over it, prompting the university's President and its DIE coordinator to respond that "respect for the observant Muslim students in that classroom should have superseded academic freedom."

Turns out that not only was the painting important in the context of Islamic art, but it was done to venerate Muhammad. And, not all sects of Islam consider images of the prophet to be verboten. Just another example of cowardly so-called "academics" eschewing history in favour of snivelling histrionics. Congratulations to the aforementioned execs at Hamline University. You are December's Retards of the Month.

Not so very long ago, I used to consider the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) to be a very important part of a balanced media diet. Now they bring us this report; a painfully compassionate voiceover telling the brave story of the Guelph Black Historical Society, entitled "Marking the Painful Past", where the Executive Director of a historical society hosted a public book burning.

Undoubtedly, at least some of the stuff they showed would be considered racist in this day and age, and in my opinion was racist at the time it was created. The starring such example is the blackface photo. However, others are less evident, such as the item she pulls out of the box while saying "It was really painful to take hold some of these imageries [sic] and think that these were how some of my ancestors are depicted." The item she is holding while she says this appears to be a hand carved African sculpture of a Masai woman featuring the tribe's traditional stretched earlobes. Not sure how that's a source of pain to her, though I would question how much of a connection this upper middle class Canadian actually feels to a culture as hard working and proud as the Masai.

Toward the end, the President of the "historical society" states without a trace of irony, "So we need to make sure that people are still aware and they keep it in their consciousness that racism is... something that we need to work towards eliminating."

Really? How are you going to keep this in people's consciousness when you're destroying the very examples of past intolerance that could be exhibited at your historical society in order to educate future generations that we need to work towards a better future?

So, to Guelph Black Historical Society President Denise Francis, to its Executive Director Kween (yass, that is her actual name), and to the CBC - congratulations! You are my Retards of the Week! Edit: I found another retard for this week (CBC, eh?), so I'm deeming these jack booted morons my first ever Retards of the Month!

I bought a physical newspaper today for the first time in over a decade, and - hoo boy - am I not missing anything.

This is coming from our province's newspaper of record, which has been in operation for almost 200 years. The three stories decided to be important enough to be front page news are as follow:

  1. A story where a gender studies prof blames all men for some piece of shit who abused his wife, and who decides that we have to 'reimagine justice', meaning she wants to find a system of rules that would allow her ilk to persecute men who abuse women while at the same time holding women who abuse men to be blameless.
  2. The Province does society a favour by no longer requiring trannies to seek psychological help before deciding to remove their genitals and take themselves out of the gene pool.
  3. Drug addled bums complain that the city, which offered them free lodging if they would move out of a needle ridden and rat infested "park" (strip of grass) in a family community, was giving them a raw deal by asking them to leave that particular location in order to protect the kids who live in the nearby houses.

Is this really today's most important news, or is this just an indication of what kind of low effort cretins the journalism schools are churning out in return for their parents' tens of thousands of tuition dollars?

It'll easily be another decade before I buy another paper, but I doubt it will still be in operation by then anyhow.

I honestly don't think this one needs further analysis. Congratulations to Flora Gill. You are July 30, 2021's Retard of the Week.

These rules put restrictions on the T levels of athletes competing in women's middle-distance events only if the athletes meet ALL of the following criteria: 46,XY sex chromosomes, not XX chromosomes; testes, not ovaries; male levels of T, not T in the far lower female range; and male-typical sensitivity to T.

If WA hadn't already determined Mboma's and Masilingi's sex and medical status, and ascertained that they are XY DSD with testes, then the Semenya rules wouldn't apply to them.

Women's sports have always been biologically unfair and stupid, and nobody has ever cared about ableism, classism, or racism in sports before. Suddenly, sports have to be fair for all women?

Bullshit. Let trans women play if you care about the best women playing, or make sports accessible to EVERYONE, including disabled people and poor people.

If these "girls" have the same condition as Caster Semenya then they aren't girls at all but boys who happen to have internal testes.

Their families and their countries doctors will have known they are males from birth and they are just trying to get their male intersex athletes through via a loophole.

Caster Semenya was raised as a boy and has fathered a child. The whole thing is just African corruption.

Maybe she might argue that she was born into the wrong body, is actually chilled-out-gender, and takes drugs to affirm her identity and better align her reality with her true self etc.

"So Woke That We're Racist and Sexist

I think bigotry is a good word for that.

These are the sort of mental gymnastics required to try to superimpose an artificial social construction, gender identity, onto actual biological gender. It just doesn't work and pointing it out gets you shut down with the transphobic slur. Bigots.

I just went off on asshole who did that yesterday, interjected themselves into a discussion of mine they didn't agree with. Of course they claimed I was transphobic. So I told them they were a hateful piece of shit bigot.

Ps. Can I have retarded flair too please?

In 2013 the Olympics eliminated wrestling for the 2020 games... Because there wasn't a women's wrestling competition.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrestling_at_the_Summer_Olympics

In February 2013, IOC members voted to remove wrestling from the Olympic programme; The New York Times cited several potential factors in the decision, including the lack of universally-known talent unlike other sports, and concern for the lack of women's competitions in wrestling (having only introduced women's freestyle competitions in 2004).

Edit: fortunately for us, they reinstated wrestling and added women's wrestling.

Seems like a contradiction.

They could have made wrestling a coed individual sport that is open to all genders.

Legendary Olympic highlights if some woman pops a chub during a match.

On a related tangent:

Japan has a reasonable political policy for trans issues. An evidence-based approach.

Renouncing your gender???

Prove it... Demonstrate your commitment by removing your renounced bits.
Then we'll talk.

Anyway, my purpose was that I wanted to piss off some snowflakes and get banned from it and that's what I did. Here's what I posted:

"Retarded" is a word, nothing more. It has no more or no less meaning than what you give to it. Sadly, practically the entire English language has been weaponized, radicalized and politicized to the point where we can barely say anything, anymore, without offending some snowflake leftist moron who "disapproves" of our use of this or that word even to the point where the classic "OK" hand sign has been branded "fascist hand gesture." In fact, it's gotten so bad that I've had to just throw up my hands, shrug and say screw it all, I'm not playing this game anymore.

With that said allow me to quote the amazing and famous Lieutenant Uhura from Star Trek: "Offended? By a word? Why would I be offended? We no longer fear words." Yeah, there's a really good lesson, there. STOP FEARING WORDS!

In a move that hits this sub's trifecta of being simultaneously retarded, gay and crazy, the gay pride committee in my neck of the woods decided to take their balls and go home because the local library didn't cave in to a petition that demanded it in essence burn all copies of the book Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters by Abigail Shrier.

Why this is retarded: The gay rights movement has benefited worldwide by others' embrace of openness and their rejection of the idea that another person's closely held beliefs should be forced underground just because the person in question might be saying something the majority does not agree with. Now that the tables are turned and Halifax Pride has a whiff of power, the magnanimity others have shown them does not seem to be a shared principle.

Why this is gay: Not because it's the pride committee. No no. This is gay in the sense that the book in question cautions against trans-sex surgery for female children. In the article we have grown-ass men in dresses pouting over the fact that this somehow debates their existence as trans identifying people. How much of a narcissist do you have to be in order to twist the book into this kind of a debate?

Why this is crazy: In North America, it's no longer a debate as to whether gay people should be afforded the rights of everyone else in the populace (and that's a good thing in my opinion). Why in god's name would you want to open up a wedge to reignite anger toward the gay community by trying to ban knowledge (even especially knowledge you disagree with)? The fact that such an idea is batshit crazy is as blatantly apparent as the five o'clock shadow sported by the stunning, brave, and altogether mentally stable individual who started the petition.

Words are worth debating.

I fully agree. It's also worth noting that a number of 'kinder' insults we use today are rooted in exactly the same definitions. According to Merriam-Webster:

Idiot, imbecile, and moron were, not so long ago, used in a psychological classification system, and each one was assigned to a fairly specific range of abilities.

Idiots. —Those so defective that the mental development never exceeds that or a normal child of about two years. Imbeciles. —Those whose development is higher than that of an idiot, but whose intelligence does not exceed that of a normal child of about seven years. Morons. —Those whose mental development is above that of an imbecile, but does not exceed that of a normal child of about twelve years. — Edmund Burke Huey, Backward and Feeble-Minded Children, 1912

To that end, I assume "Retarded", which literally means "delayed" came into common parlance to replace the above definitions with a kinder word - which it would have been when it first came into use. However, it too became a slur because it was used to compare non-delayed people doing dumb things to people who did not have the mental capacity to realize that certain actions didn't adhere to the common norm.

So the root problem isn't the word; it's the comparison of the actions of those who should know better to those who lack that facility. This is why we've now switched to 'developmentally delayed', which is another, longer way of saying what 'retarded' means. In another 20-30 years, 'developmentally delayed' will also be a slur.

So, the whole cycle is all pretty retarded if you ask me.

Sometimes, telling people the truth should be very insulting to them. Many people are retarded.

Someone was questioning my denigration of certain Indian cultural practices, and asked if I thought every Indian is retarded. I looked it up, and discovered that average IQ in India is 82. So no, not every Indian is retarded, just most of them.

Words are worth debating.

/u/magnora7 - I await your judgement and will happily comply upon its receipt. It's true that this sub's name is reactionary, but please consider the following in your deliberation:

For clarification, believe it or not this sub has an actual purpose. If Critical Theorists believe that any word can be used to mean anything at any time, then this sub posits that "Retarded", "Gay", and "Crazy" can be derogatory toward unacceptable behaviour whilst not being insulting to individuals. So let's show that we can do this.

I have also added rules to further structure the sub. If this is still seen as dragging down the pyramid of debate, so be it. But I do believe that in a moment of history when we are told at the same time by the same people that "words matter" and also that words don't matter (depending on the words and the people who sit in judgement), there is room for debate on the context of these specific words and how they can / should be used given the very recent and more historical roles they have played in repression of people and repression of thought.

I have clarified these thoughts on the page somewhat and will post more if needed. Yes, the sub is for fun, but there is a point.

The kid in this video is everything that's wrong with modern debate: she seeks to protect everyone by saying that she's not trying to take away your freedom of speech, but instead her goal is to stop people having to grow up in a hostile climate. Which actually translates to "I expect you to take away your own freedom of speech".

The fact of the matter is, if we stop attaching so much emotional fragility to words and develop a bit of resilience and backbone, we won't need to worry about sanitizing the world. And we'll have a better go at interacting with one another.

Welcome to That's Retarded. Let your freak flag fly and let's have some good discussions.
