One could waste every second of a long life, being sad for every species we've ever lost, which is literally 99% of everything that has ever evolved here.
It's how we pick ourselves back up and remember that there is still a chance to save what little remains, that will keep us from just giving it all up, like a candle without oxygen.
Rest in peace, George, let us never forget what we've lost - but also do not let it drown us, while we can still save others.
