Patented in 1857, the phonautograph was the earliest known device to record sound, but had no means of playback. The recordings were first converted back into sound in 2008.

These are incredible

Just like looking at the oldest photographs, it is always interesting to discover these things. It is a shame that 30 years later the phonograph would make these obsolete and all investigations into them would cease.
