Fairly interesting, and telling. People still like to brag about a rolex, but what does it mean?
"Hey, I've got a rolex, and I'm telling you because I want you to know how much better I am than you, and also to make up for my small penis!"
~Or
"Hey, I've got so much money, I can afford to do stupid crap with it, just to show you how much more I have!"
I lean towards the first one above, but it still means they got ripped off; funny what people will pay for vanity, or privilege above others.

How about "Hey, I've got an expensive watch, and I'm telling you because I want you to know we're equals and both probably fucked someone over to be able to afford it, or at least comes from a family who've fucked someone over so we share common ground."
New money shakes their rolexes at plebs to make themselves feel better. Old money discreetly wears their Patek Philippe as a sort of insignia.
