Read the article, basically the definitions in the NFA used by the BATF(division of IRS) don't really define much of anything, and the last 50 years of enforcement has been based more so off of apparent authority.
On that note, guns are scary to take to the gun range. You'll run into ATF agents here or there, and they use a 'point system' to define a hole host of weapons; having the wrong part can put you over the limit; thus violating Federal Law....Insta-criminal.
