It worked. Chile was saved from socialism. Pinochet wasn't a nice man, but that's unavoidable when dealing with deadly threats like socialism. The people he killed were ready themselves to kill far larger numbers of Chileans, and they intended to export their revolution to other countries to cause the same catastrophe there.

The election of Allende was much like Brexit - stupid, uninformed voters making a disastrous decision, against their own interests. Turkeys voting for Christmas.
