If you join a instance Mastodon sucks. If you run your own instance Mastodon rocks.

If they made it easier to run your own instance meaning 99% of people ran their own instance then we wouldn't need to join people's instance.

Unfortunately it's very difficult setting up your own instance so people go join other instances.

I joined 2 and got banned within 2 days.

I want to start my own instance but it's f-en hard to get it going and requires me to buy a server.

They should make it how you can run your own instance by using your phone and only you can join your own instance. That's would solve all the problems.

Mastadon is just an instance on the Fediverse. It's an instance run by a power-tripping little bitch, but it's just one instance.

It unfortunately has good branding and has gotten people (mostly normies) to call most of Fedi "Mastodon", which is incorrect. That'd be like saying the site with the little blue bird that Elon bought last year is called Nitter because someone posted a Nitter link to a post there.

One of these years I'll have at least one set up for folks.

this guy says he's offering to host instances for people: https://blog.freespeechextremist.com/blog/managed-pleroma.html

His service returns a 502.

I liked the part that one used to have to be technical to publish on the Internet.

I guess it's not just me who got a 502 then. I think you can still message him on fediverse even if the page isn't loading, his account is active. But I suppose it would be good to check that it's still being offered. I just messaged him about it, I'll see what he says.

I got a reply and he said he's not offering it anymore, but he recommended https://fediverse.express/ .

Seems that the TL:DR is that this person claims you can be banned at any second without warning or appeal. Of course we cannot verify if this is true or not; it's just this one person's claim. Last November he wrote a pro-Twitter post: https://markcathcart.com/2022/11/11/mastodon-twitter/ . So something is odd here. But it's good to read both articles. I've not managed to navigate Mastadon, so I agree with the November article. Now it's good to know that one can lose a Mastadon account so easily and without warning.

He is right that instance's admin is basically mini-Elon Musk - he can ban you on a whim (and you'll lose your posts and followers), or decide he is not into Mastodon business one day and delete the whole instance.

It's the most important part in selecting an instance - researching what kind of person this instance's admin is.

The TL;DR is "I posted a recording of kids talking about masturbation and got banned."
