If you've listened to Jaron Lanier talk about this type of thing you might see things otherwise. Basically the ad model drives the bad shit because outrage makes people stay on site and watch ads, thus content gets sorted along those lines. If it's subscription, that incentive disappears and you get less crazy shit.
