Mussel massacre, devastating to the ecosystem of the river Hukkajoki

One of the worst ever environmental disasters in Finland happened last Friday. A scientist studying fresh water mussels in Hukkajoki, Suomussalmi, happened to see a logging machine drive across a river where endangered mussels live. She told the driver it's illegal to go through the river, but the driver only laughed and told her to "take of her bra". She filmed the machine drive through the river again and contacted the authorities.

Now police are investigating it as a serious environmental crime, which could lead to jail time and heavy fines. Logging drivers firm was working as a contractor for Finnish-Swedish forestry company Stora Enso. As hundreds of mussels died, the fine can rise to millions of Euros. The companies knew about the mussels and were forbidden to go through the river, but they ignored the law and logged trees through it at least 300 times. There's suspicion that it has happened before in other rivers, but this was the first time someone witnessed it.

This is some bullshit. Millions of euros for a few clams? I wish she would have taken off her bra, too.

Not just clams, crayfish were affected too. A freshwater pearl mussel is valued at 598 euros – equivalent to approximately 6,800 kronor – which means the forestry company risks having to pay millions in compensation. And they (I mean people of Stora Enson, the company responsible for logging) were warned in advance: According to an email seen by HS, Stora Enso was aware of the presence of the endangered freshwater mussel and the necessary protective measures before the logging that caused the damage in Suomussalmi.

A climate-related mass die-off leaves over 100 tons of dead fish collecting at a Greek port

Water levels rose abruptly in fall 2023 during a deadly storm that caused extensive flooding in central Greece, but have since receded due to low rainfall and successive summer heat waves.
