I saw the original 1984 movie and played both Dune 1 and Dune 2 games.

You dont really need to read the novels :)

The 2000 series was good too containing more details from the books. You don't need to read the books, but you get so much more from it. Granted, the imagery of the movies was often much grander than I had in mind.
