We've blocked 1.03 1.6 million fraudulent connection attempts in just the last few tens of minutes... Our previous DDOS record was 600k fraudulent connection attempts across a few hours. For comparison a normal hour of saidit traffic is about 250k connection attempts.
The server did go down for a bit because of this ongoing DDOS attack, even despite blocking over a million fraudulent connection attempts, so I've turned on the cloudflare captcha protection for a bit. (I was just able to turn it off again, so it was only on for about 5 minutes, but I may have to re-enable it later as the attack progresses)
We had about 1 minute of total downtime from this massive attack, so I think we did a great job defending it so far. If this attack had happened to us a year or two ago, we would've been down for like 4-8 hours probably.
Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know about these ongoing attacks, in case anyone was wondering why the site was a bit slow for the moment, or wondering why they had to do captchas.
