Switzerland it is then. I don't think you really even need to consider the alternatives if you already know you are guaranteed reliably.

Yeah it's basically between Switzerland and Norway. And also off-shore is another option, in international waters. That's also the same price as Switzerland and Norway. It's a new option I just learned about recently. It might be good because there's no government, but that might also make it weak as well, if there's literal pirates that hijack the offshore rig the servers are on. But from a legal perspective it's probably the most free, but in some ways that makes it more vulnerable to outside influence instead of being protected. But an offshore rig would probably have better ping to America, where most of our users are.

But it's looking like probably Switzerland or Norway. Still thinking it over though and considering options.

I have to come clean man. When I said "offshore" I didn't mean in international waters... I just meant outside of the US. The one I thought looked cool is in the Netherlands. I should have said something but it was like 3am so I flaked. My bad.

I think Sealand did used to offer hosting though. Also I think the only real advantage of not-in-US hosting for SaidIt is to escape DMCA notices.

Haha oh. No worries. I think there are still offshore options, but yeah it's probably best anyway to do something a little more protected and less random.

Although the idea of running a server farm on a boat powered by solar or a generator in international waters does sound like kind of an amusing business model, haha.

So I'm basically between Switzerland and Norway then. They are both the same price so it's basically down to which we think is better for the longevity and safety of saidit. I lean towards Switzerland, but I guess it feels a tiny bit like "feeding the beast" to have it there, because it's the storehouse of the money of the hyper-wealthy. And we might get slightly better ping in Norway because it's slightly physically closer to the US. Both seem quite secure from a government intervention standpoint. What do you think? It's basically a coin flip as far as I can tell. Unless you can find any compelling news stories about Swiss or Norwegian servers being taken down by governmental action

Tough one and I'm not really in the loop. I have heard positive privacy things about Switzerland a lot, but yeah it also seems to be the home of the uber-elite. Can you link or PM me to the hosting companies you are considering? It looks like DMCA policy might differ by company.

Sure! Good idea.

Here's my favorite one I've found from each country so far:

https://oneprovider.com/dedicated-servers/oslo-norway

$46 for 8GB RAM

https://my.alpinedc.ch/index.php?/cart/&step=3

$30/mo for 4GB RAM

I think switzerland is like "home base" because they all know their data and money is safe there. But I don't think it's compromised in the sense of data security. And I think their entire business model for the country is based on not compromising security, and I think they know if they start breaking that people will lose faith. Like everyone is losing faith in NZ with their sudden law changes after the shooting. Switzerland has a long track record of not changing their airtight data-security laws. Norway does too, but not as deeply perhaps. It's probably a coin flip tbh. Switzerland just sounds more secure too, I think the users would find a swiss server more impressive than a norway one, even though they're the same cost.

Anyway, tell me what you think of those specific companies I linked to.

Lol that's crazy. Actual pirates are still a thing.

You could make the decision easy for yourself by relying on the userbase's opinion, assuming you have trust in it.

Heh yeah pirates or even government-paid pirates! Probably more secure in one the countries. I actually did ask people's opinion here, but no one responded.

I guess I could make a dedicated post about it, I'll probably do that tomorrow or soon.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that governments are involved somewhere along the line. o_o Oh, I wasn't aware you had already asked. Need to pay more attention in the future.
