What I think actually happened was rich corporations bought it out and closed it on purpose because they were consolidating the internet.

That's super obviously what happened. They kowtowed to advertisers, and tried to make more profit, and squeezed out real users in the process. I think pretty much everyone is in agreement that that's what happened. I've literally never heard the first story you said some people believe.
