No, that's not how Saidit works. It's designed to be less toxic. If you dislike something, explain why in a comment – like I'm doing now.

Oh God I hope the objective here isn't to be less toxic. I feel like that's a slippery slope. Like who decides what is Toxic? And once you've decided that something is toxic and there should be less of it, then what's next? Well great now we're censored. I think downvotes is a great idea, then the community as a whole can demonstrate what we collectively think is toxic.

The whole point of not having a downvote button is so people don't just label stuff as "bad", "wrong", "bad" without explaining why.

Reddit-like downvotes allow people to decide that things are toxic, reduce their visibility, and turn subreddits into echo-chambers without even meaning to. We are in agreement.

(note: edited rather drastically; the first sentence is from the original, and I removed references to me being irrationally cross for no apparent reason, but the rest is new)

Oh right on. And please be cross. I fuckin hated that overly tight PC corner the Reddit mods had people backed into. They used it as a cheap way to censor what didn't fit their world/emotional views.

How does "not having a downvote button" equal "an overly tight PC corner"? The removal of the downvote button is designed in part to reduce censorship, which you could otherwise easily do by making a bunch of alts and downvoting stuff to oblivion.

We are in violent agreement about this side-issue. Now can we get back to discussing the downvote?

In this vein - could a comment that is "more insightful" than something "above" it - be highlighted or something?

If you want to sort comments by "insightful" rather than "top" (which is combined score of funny and insightful) look at the very top of the comments and you'll see a drop-down option to do so that says "Sorted by:"

[–]Vigte 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

I meant, kind of highlighting a rebuttle to a post.

As in - if a comment is getting more insighfuls than what is "above" it in the chain (be that OP, or a comment) - it could be highlighted, as it's obviously a "really good reply".

Ah sorry I see what you mean now, interesting idea

Like a SaidIt megaphone that highlights the stuff that Vigte agrees with.

He could also add a a SaidIt "cismale" option to marginalize other opinions.

Hmmmm

Damn you text based internet conversation, you bested an autist again. I hope you're proud of yourself!

(This is why I have a no texting rule in any relationship unless emergency :p)

It's the logical progression of the proposed concept. Also, I posted a hilarious cismale joke a couple of months ago.

Wizzwizz4 is jumping to conclusions, because he doesn't realize that we're forum buddies. This is understandable.

Wizzwizz4 is... out... to get me???

Come-on wizzy! That ain't cool. :-/

I just thought like, a coloured tab in the corner of a post if it has a higher score than the one above it.

Like this I guess

Like a free algorithmic gold, I just like sorting data lol.

I don't think it would be as problematic here as it would be on Reddit - like you pointed out, it's a "slippery slope" (which I really don't see as a fallacy, at least not how it's used by concerned people around here). People around here aren't as disgusting and NPC level as Reddit and I don't think it would be as abused and evolved as it would be there.

The only thing that could defeat post highlighting is vote manipulation - which is against the rules and being monitored - so I don't see how it would be THAT bad.

Edit Here I took your idea and ran with it - you should feel honoured to be the first recipient of the Straight White Male post flair (read; shame!!!)

[–]Tom_Bombadil 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The shame!!!

Truly, I am disgraced... (Resplendent dishonor). The fact that I'm the first branded with the cursed mark.

Tom's sick of this shit!

I've shall spread my SWM pestilence to the community.

At some point, if SaidIt grows enough then others will be needed to fill admin positions. There's no way to know how rules may be interpreted (manipulated) in the future, etc.

I like it. ;-)

It's sarcasm. That's why there's a "cismale" option; that's /u/Tom_Bombadil using hyperbole to convey his concerns in a manner not very high up on the debate pyramid.

No, if you vote as funny you are giving the post another point and causing it to rise.

[–]Anonfamous 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

New here. So what is the little light and the smiley face? What do they represent?

[–]Entropick 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The lightbulb is insightful, the laughter is funny; not up or down.

[–]Anonfamous 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Thanks.

Think of it as an insightful (+2), levity (+1), or insightevity (+3).
