"Can The Lounge be bridged/synced with Discord (and/or Matrix)? #3012" https://github.com/thelounge/thelounge/issues/3012

" Hi. I love The Lounge. I use it daily on SaidIt.net. I love SaidIt so much I'm writing an article about it: https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt

Today I started a Discord chat. https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/bkz/saiditnet_discord_chat/

This is because the admin needed to reboot for some reason and it came up. https://saidit.net/s/frontpage/comments/b9t/is_there_a_discord_chat_for_saidit_while_the/

So I'm hoping, coming to you, the source, we might find answers rather than speculate...

Can The Lounge be bridged/synced with Discord?

We're all for FLOSS but the reality is we want broad access for whomever and however.

Thanks for your attention.

~ Jason "

Well this BitlBee thing being able to integrate with lots of services sounds pretty cool. And being able to keep TheLounge at the same time sounds cool.

This web client Riot for matrix could almost replace TheLounge. It doesn't look very usable on small screens though: https://matrix.org/docs/projects/client/riot.html

Did you see this post-closing response? :

" MiniDigger commented 16 hours ago: I think the easiest way would be to use a bot to bridge a discord channel to an IRC channel, so everybody can use it and you don't split your community. I am part of a community that developed this bot and uses it daily serving thousands of messages, so I can recommend that https://github.com/zachbr/Dis4IRC "

Cool I didn't see this last one, looks legit, although you have to choose which Discord channels to follow in configuration/it's hard coded. ThatD be okay though, the community can request channels to be added.

Separate the subs and chat channels, problem solved. 😋

Matrix looks the same as Discord and The Lounge.

True but under the hood it is open source and decentralized.

Isn't The Lounge too? Or just FOSS but I guess not decentralized?

Is that FOSDS?

I'm guessing they're working on the apps?

The lounge is just a web irc client, we have it connecting to the open source centralized unreal irc server that we run.

I think we'd be willing to change up the back end, and even ditch IRC, but there's very few chat frontends that happily run all tiny in the sidebar.

Is the side the best place for it?

For example, what if it were at the foot, perhaps in a floating (non-scrolling) or permanent (non-close-able) frame that can be minimized or expanded or adjusted.

Good questions.

As one who dislikes the chat, I don't see the problem. 😂

But on a serious note, I think the chat serves a different function than the forum. We use the comment field to comment posts, what is the sub-specific chat for, discussing the comments?

And I consider it a privacy issue that someone could potentially be hovering in the chat (without logging in no less), register when users log in to a channel, substract the timeout and end up with an accurate list of what sub's the logged in users spend their time on.
