Some absolute retard forgot to renew the site's certificate and spent two days straight thumbing their asshole instead of taking literally 5 seconds to fix the problem

Okay that was pretty rude. You don't know the full story. The site could've been dropped. Or what if the maintainers were killed? Those are extreme scenarios, but you never know. This isn't reddit, so I tend to think there's a legitimate excuse for why it went offline.

What, you don't consider thumbing an asshole for a couple of days a legitimate excuse? I mean, if they hit the sweet spot up in there, I can see how that would be distracting.

I don't think that's what happened. And I'm honestly worried about him because he's been missing for a week, on all websites.

You worry too much.

And we don't owe him anything.

    That's how he wants it.

    That's what he gets.

    Saddit sucks.

FYI, asshole thumbing is an essential part of work-life balance.

IIRC, 3-month free SSL registrations are available - or for about $90 for 5 years (times how many domains you have). It's a scam in the name of "security".

SSL certs validate that I am who I claim to be... i.e. some guy with a credit card. I am definitely some guy with a credit card.

While you can buy a multi year cert, they only issue them at 1 year intervals now.

Yeh, "security", which is really code for "progressivism" and "we know you're to stupid to make decisions for yourself, so we will do this for you"

      > The current model also breaks anonymity of administrators which is the real reason why the powers that be want this system.

Some hosting could remain anonymous, paid with bitcoin. No longer, it seems.

Foolish or brave, I'm not afraid to use my real name. If anyone needs their SSLs to have a name, and can help set up mine, I'll lend my name.

It's the old story - if it wasn't the SSL cert, it was the domain name registration. Despite the fact that calendar reminders have been a part of computing since the 70s, people just register the cert or domain name and then forget about it. When the reminder email is sent, it goes to a mailbox that nobody uses any more.

You don't when you aren't sure if you feel like paying for the renewal. I have a feeling whoever is in charge of the cert just doesn't care that much.

Yeah but it's a real pain in the ass to automate renewal with it.

You still have to upload it and perform a few steps. I guess you could pay someone to do that, too.

M7 was offline for a little over a week, the site SSL certificate expired, and D3 came back to fix it for us.

Thanks to D3! And M7 for keeping this site going in the first place!
