The lightbulb should get brighter with clicks and the smiley face should get smilier with clicks to reinforce the proper meaning of these buttons

I like these buttons, I don't want to criticise them, they are unique and an original way to sort different kinds of material. But I feel like people will click both buttons when they want to show maximum support for something regardless of whether they think it's funny or insightful or both.

I think it would be ideal to have some clever way to stop people from clicking funny when they don't really mean funny or insightful when they don't really mean insightful, that does not make saidit it more complicated or unintuitive to use. I think a simple positive reinforcement message could be good. For example, a post with lots of lightbulb likes could make the lightbulb get progressively lighter and a post with lots of smiley face likes could get progressively smilier. A discrete text message that pops up and disappears, saying something like "you think this post is funny / insightful", could also help to prevent people from clicking the wrong buttons but this may add clutter.

    We already did that 2 years ago. It's officially "fun" not funny. It used to be "funny" though but we changed it for the reasons you said. Sometimes there are fun things that aren't funny (like music, or neat pictures)

        Meh. I was being half-facetious anyway. I think Digg ruined social media at the outset by implementing comment rating in the first place. It's just automated passive aggression. Either get have both or get rid of both.

        Also, a downvote button can only be abused if it's coupled with a comment-hiding mechanism. If downvoted comments are left displayed in their position in the thread, I see no problem. It can be honorable to have a -231 comment in a forum where the community is with their heads fully lodged up their asses.

          Good ideas! I like it. https://www.saidit.net/s/deutsch/ has CSS that kind of accomplishes this. The buttons go from black and white to full color when clicked.

          Oh probably because they ported the CSS theme from reddit which doesn't have a dark mode, and then just swapped out the icons. They probably have no CSS for dark mode so it just reverts to default

          They use down-votes as a form of censorship, so they can keep opinions they don't like away from the front page. That's why it's become a left-wing echo chamber.

          but sometimes i wish that we had another button besides insightful and funny, maybe a retarded button.. not that it would censor you, but it would be interesting to be able to sort messages to show the ones that got the most "retarded" votes.

          yeah, like how now we can sort messages by new/fun/insightful, i am probably wrong but there might be an easy way to just add another button like "retarded", which would make people laugh and when this site makes people happy they are much more likely to enjoy their experience here and will return more frequently.

          Oooh that's cute, what if the rays on the light-bulb 'illuminated' (change colour to yellow) pair by pair until the central bulb followed suit? Maybe the smiley's eyes begin fully open and progressively got squintier? That'd give it an amusing -> funny axis vs dimly -> brightly lit axis.

          My biggest problem is deciding which button to click. The whole "forums, but you can vote on posts" thing is pertty new for me.
