We already did that 2 years ago. It's officially "fun" not funny. It used to be "funny" though but we changed it for the reasons you said. Sometimes there are fun things that aren't funny (like music, or neat pictures)

      Ok done.

I'm petitioning to change it to remove the N because FUN will trigger some people who can't run marathons.

I use it as a "so stupid I loled at your stupidity" button.

It should just be replaced with a downvote button.

      Down-votes are just bottom-up censorship.

I clicked the smiley because this amused me.

Meh. I was being half-facetious anyway. I think Digg ruined social media at the outset by implementing comment rating in the first place. It's just automated passive aggression. Either get have both or get rid of both.

Also, a downvote button can only be abused if it's coupled with a comment-hiding mechanism. If downvoted comments are left displayed in their position in the thread, I see no problem. It can be honorable to have a -231 comment in a forum where the community is with their heads fully lodged up their asses.

Right, but what does karma buy? If karma is just another number, who cares?

          downvotes enforce hegemony

Good ideas! I like it. https://www.saidit.net/s/deutsch/ has CSS that kind of accomplishes this. The buttons go from black and white to full color when clicked.

Weird that it uses the default icons for dark mode.

          [–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Oh probably because they ported the CSS theme from reddit which doesn't have a dark mode, and then just swapped out the icons. They probably have no CSS for dark mode so it just reverts to default

Oh, yeah, that's pro'ly it then.

i'm in dark mode, and things already change quite a lot when I click them. is it different normally?

          [–]TheAmeliaMay 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, but s/deutsch only changes the icons for light mode.

i dont have a problem having a downvote option, but like at reddit where they can downvote me out of existence that is a bit much.

          [–]TheAmeliaMay 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

They use down-votes as a form of censorship, so they can keep opinions they don't like away from the front page. That's why it's become a left-wing echo chamber.

          [–]Vagina7 1 insightful - 5 fun1 insightful - 4 fun2 insightful - 5 fun -  (6 children)

but sometimes i wish that we had another button besides insightful and funny, maybe a retarded button.. not that it would censor you, but it would be interesting to be able to sort messages to show the ones that got the most "retarded" votes.

          [–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

That actually is a pretty interesting idea. Like a downvote, but it doesn't subtract points, it's just another category to vote in that gives 0 points

          [–]Vagina7 1 insightful - 3 fun1 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

yeah, like how now we can sort messages by new/fun/insightful, i am probably wrong but there might be an easy way to just add another button like "retarded", which would make people laugh and when this site makes people happy they are much more likely to enjoy their experience here and will return more frequently.

          [–]KaiEdwardBannon 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I wonder how the .compact interface and the app would handle that since insightful is update and funny is downvote.

          [–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah we'd have to rewrite both. That's often why stuff that seems like small changes to the site end up being a lot of work

          [–]TheAmeliaMay 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

          That would be funny.

          [–]strangelove 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oooh that's cute, what if the rays on the light-bulb 'illuminated' (change colour to yellow) pair by pair until the central bulb followed suit? Maybe the smiley's eyes begin fully open and progressively got squintier? That'd give it an amusing -> funny axis vs dimly -> brightly lit axis.

          [–]wristaction 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

There should be a downvote button.

stop people from clicking funny when they don't really mean funny or insightful

is this really upvote tone policing on Saidit? lmao

          [–]TheAmeliaMay 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My biggest problem is deciding which button to click. The whole "forums, but you can vote on posts" thing is pertty new for me.
