Proposal for how Saidit could actually develop the early environment of reddit, and become a valid reddit-alternative.

  1. You need the actual, properly-implemented tools that are vital to modding: Reddit enhancement suite, and /r/toolbox. Currently you have a really bad implementation of RES only.
  2. Once you have these tools Saidit is now a valid option for mods willing to move their communities over. So contact individual mod teams (of the smaller, high quality, intellectual subs) and discuss with them that Reddit is no longer an appealing website https://old.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/apu3oz/with_the_recent_chinese_company_tencent_in_the - in the 2 years since that post was made it has only gotten drastically worse. Reddit has degraded into a cesspool of idiocy, groupthink, low quality fluff content, heavily manipulated & biased content, extreme corruption and abuse by most moderator teams, and admins applying more and more censorship and community bans. The admins have personally guided this decline by promoting fluff, low-quality content for the sole reason of attracting more users to have more eyes for advertisers. They have shown complete apathy for the issues above and overall experience and quality of the website.

Here is how mods might move their communities over:

Still allow link submissions only. Lock comments automatically and have an automod sticky linking to the Saidit community and saying something like:

Reddit has degraded into a cesspool of idiocy, groupthink, low quality fluff content, heavily manipulated & biased content, extreme corruption and abuse by most moderator teams, and admins applying more and more censorship and community bans.

Due to this, we have opted to move our community to Saidit - a website that is attempting to replicate the former higher quality environment of Reddit. A site where there is no need for numerous subs to document the rampant corruption, abuse, and censorship.

We're still allowing link submissions here, but if you'd like to take part in the discussion you'll need to do so on Saidit [link to Saidit community].

Text post submissions can be technically allowed, but they can be automatically removed and the user notified of the above.

Looking at Saidit's front page right now is very disappointing. It's almost solely low quality, far-right content. As much as I don't like Tildes' UI and design, they did a much better job of creating the high-quality environment that reddit used to be.

Not really. All moderation is 100% transparent on SaidIt. Everyone is required to adapt to SaidIt rules, and if they fall out of line and abuse their power M7 will resolve it.

    SaidIt has had absolutely shitty leadership on the sub-creation front since before I arrived, despite my pleading for order. Sure M7 can put a stupid arbitrary top limit of 40 for the illusion of no "power-mods", but there's hundreds or thousands of subs now.

    I mod 40 subs by not moderating them. I have 10 or 20 more that I'd like to create, but /u/magnora7 established the arbitrary limit of 40 max, even though I'd done absolutely nothing wrong to demand such a limit - and wrong-doing should be the real limit. I understand why there's a self-conscious limit on SaidiIt for tamping down power-mods that Reddit culture frowns on yet somehow overlooks - but this isn't Reddit, and I'm not a power-mod.

    Empty subs, IMO, should be erased and/or unmodded after a month - including mine. Unmoderated subs, if you can measure that, a few.

    If I was on top of my game I'd have a "MySubs" multisub with all my subs to check on the regular. I've made lots of multisubs, yet don't use any. That's on me. I still check a few times a year.

    I didn't come here from Reddit and have never considered myself a Redditor. I've never given a shit about Reddit. I came here as a truth-seeker.

      I don't need to be mod to be actively confronting issues. I will explain things to folks, report them, and even call M7 when necessary.

      I am hanging onto the subs I want to do some things with, sooner or later. Animated banners would be nice. But I can't get the support I need to finish the CSS so I figure what's the fucking point. I might as well delete all the CSS and just have boring subs and unmod.

      Lately I've been making subs and unmodding myself. Then the topical sub is out there to be posted in. Unfortunately I haven't been filling them up as perhaps I ought to. Times have gotten strange and distracting. Plus I'm getting ambitious, unfocused, and will be starting some big projects.

      Still, I have a list of topical subs I want to see ASAP, created by me or anyone:

      • Labor (less specific than /s/LaborRights)
      • Marketing (informative vs pressured/compelled/persuaded by overwhelming feelz, distinctly different than advertising)

      I have many more in my list, but none as pressing. I also have a list of music genres, a list of personal projects, a list of personal hobbies and interests, and I even have a few community subs maybe someone might like to make first:

      • Build_Our_Futures - for discussing our plans, goals, and dreams within any sort of purpose, practicality, sustainability, self-reliance, etc
      • Find_More_Like_This - present something you like (music, movies, tv, images, ideas, stories, etc) and folks offer similar things in the same vein, genre, style, etc
      • If_I_Were_Leader - hypothetical pontificating, whether as leader of SaidIt, your nation, or the universe

      And I have a dozen more that I actually want to cultivate with direction and purpose, so I'd need to control them until they became self evident what they're about so they could continue without me.

      MANY of these topical subs would be MUCH better served with metatags or some sort of searchable classification system. I've been screaming about metatags since my first month here. I wouldn't be cross-posting all the fucking time, nor would anyone ever need to.

        I know /u/Enza animated the banner for WhiteOwlSocialClub but I don't know how.

        I made an animated banner for /s/Surveillance with just a globe spinning in the middle - but it would only accept JPGs or PNGs. I don't what is required to upload a GIF. I feel foolish about it, but gave up. /u/d3rr didn't have answers then.

        I thought of a hack and I think it might have been used for /s/ConsumeProduct: Have a giant image with each frame, then animate the image huge leaps, to the frame, like a film strip. It would be a pain in the ass to make the image like that and then to code the animation.

        An aPNG is an animated png, you can turn any gif into an animated png! I just made the aPNG transparent (and it was a flying owl), so I made the banner slide to the left and since it’s a transparent aPNG, it looks animated.

        You can have any image on your sub animated, not just the banner. You just need to shrink the file size of the aPNG or else it won’t upload.

              We need to /s/DecentralizeAllThings and /s/FederateAllMedia.

              DECENTRALIZE to spread out and to never be taken down together.

              FEDERATE to interact "centrally" in a contiguous cooperative manner, mirroring all social media, media, and activity - despite being on different platforms.

              In this way, instead of the center being a single site (corporate or not), the "center" is wherever you are, like being on the Internet.

              IMO, MediaWiki might be among the best options out there. It's exceptionally supported, very robust, easy to install, and of course it could manage all the media you can throw at it.

              MediaWiki would also be a terrific forum base, but I see 3 problems with embracing MediaWiki for Reddit-clone communities. 1) The site layout/format would need an overhaul to redesign it to appear and function like a Reddit-type forum, including permissions and voting/points(/and crypto?) systems. 2) Federating. 3) A minor issue - the markdown code is different, though easy enough to adapt to - plus they have formatting aids. If someone or some folks could address those two major issues I'm certain they'd have a huge hit on their hands and many sites might migrate.

                  d3rr is not as keen on topically-specific subs as I am.

                  While our politics may be at odds, by their name alone I suspect /u/fediverseshill might be keen on your new sub and allied on that front.

                  I'm currently preoccupied with some big developments (while also distracted by SaidIt), but soon I can fit in some work on a mascot and/or a FederateAllMedia banner and/or later a CSS if you wish.

                  If you want one ASAP I could re-purpose one from my banner gallery. For example, M7 removed my CSS and banner for /s/SocialMedia and it was one of my good ones. I always meant to re-do the DecentralizeAllThings banner, and since the subs are cousins I could make them similar, or even the same. Or better still - you tell me what you'd like and/or we could develop something together. No pressure, no hurry, and don't feel shy to turn down my offer.                     D3 and I used to co-mod it and some other subs.

                    M7 made a stupid arbitrary limit of 40 subs - to simply appear better than Reddit without "powermods".

                    I've un-modded from many subs. So did D3.

                    M7 changed the SaidIt layout. It fucked up my CSS. I could only fix those I had access too.

                    I assume it was easier for him to just delete it, since we abandoned it. He could have asked. I haven't asked him why.

                      I could copypasta the upgraded CSS easily enough, and ask him to remod me if I cared.

                      I'm pretty over trying to improve SaidIt. (D3 seems to be too.) M7 has expressed zero plans or ambitions and is simply coasting. The code is open but M7 and SaidIt are not. If I wanted to do more I'd start a new forum where it would be 100% transparent and democratic with a select team of aces. That may yet happen, with or without me.

                      I'm tired of the news and have my own ambitious projects to focus on. You'll hear about them soon enough.
