I see it in terms of function. Whenever people want something, they will try to get it in whatever way.

The first issue is people who steal our identities. For the longest time, LGB people were seen as either unimportant and invisible, or as sick and dangerous. When that began to change in the second half of the 20th century and the struggles and achievements of LGB people became part of the public consciousness, lots of straight people went "wow! that's amazing!" Over that time, that turned into "I want that." And since all you need to also be a "brave, underdog, special LGB person" is an identity, you just water down and make vague the terms and identities until you can claim one for yourself without anyone of importance objecting. Hence why we have so many people calling themselves "queer" now without any further explanation and who, when pressed, show themselves to be nothing but fetishists or people with an unusual fashion sense.

The other issue is people wanting to use our social standing. For the aforementioned reasons, there is a lot of goodwill towards us at this moment (though that's already changing again thanks to TRAs and their aggressive behaviour.) When you can just generalize us as this monolithic group that is supposedly entirely on your side, that goodwill is now aimed at you, too. This is why so many companies make vague and meaningless statements of support toward us and why politically left-wing people - who have claimed to be the only rightful defenders of our communities for decades now - want to downplay any internal struggles (such as LGB vs. the T) and often define "queer" as explicitly including left-wing ideology that really has nothing to do with us.
