It's meant as a controlled opposition mechanism. Also, one of the founders of Reddit founded Voat itself.

I don't think the founders of voat had anything to do with reddit

Founded in April 2014 as WhoaVerse, the website was a hobby project of Atif Colo (known on Voat as @Atko), then a student pursuing a BSc, who was later joined by Justin Chastain (known as @PuttItOut).

I've been playing close attention to all this since it started and that's the first time I've ever heard someone say that reddit founders also made voat. If you have a source on that though, I'm all ears

Voat probably is a honeypot or something at this point though, I'd agree with that.

By making militant far-right people think they are in good company. And then when some of them start getting organized to actually do stuff IRL, the FBI shows up
