It looks as though the chat has been temporarily disabled.
We sometimes do this when we get a major influx of new users.
I'm certain it will be returned as soon as possible.

How does this influx compare to other major influxes of new users SaidIt has experienced?

It seems to be a bit more substantial than most, from where I sit. magnora7 will almost certainly post an announcement regarding the events, soon. He usually does.

I think it's the biggest one ever, about 1k new users in a day. IP2 moving here was big too, but they trickled in slower.
