Thank you to everyone who has put forward financial support to make saidit possible. Right now our expenses are almost completely covered by donations! Saidit costs $91/mo to run and we're getting about the same in donations right now, mostly through patreon but also through some cryptocurrency donations as well.

It's great that we can all have no ads! No ad blocker needed. No longer page-loads because of the ads. No information gathering through ads. No advertiser sway over saidit. Google ads can't come to us one day and decide things for us. We're not financially dependent on any advertising agency. This is freedom!

Also we have no single "angel investor" that has to cover most of our costs. Instead we have 16 different donors, who each contributed a few bucks. This means no one person can call the shots for saidit, because our financing is sourced evenly across the crowd.

I would list every donor's names out individually, but I want to protect their privacy... I'm sure some would be okay with it but some would not, so I don't want to upset anyone. Anyway, thank you. Especially the donors who have been giving month after month, that long-term support means a lot.

Thanks for keeping this place churning. There is a lot of unrest on reddit right now. More and more people are tired of being censored for no reason. I try to advertise as often as possible in the least shilly way.

I can't help to support our site financially.
So the best thing I can do is to offer assistance in keeping our site clean.
It's honest work for an honest cause, and I'm glad to do it.

Kindly consider a platform besides Patreon as an alternative. As a tech giant they're always one Karen away from deciding none of the patrons actually want your content. (And crypto is fine except i don't have crypto)

That's awesome! The site maintenance costs still seem to be very low for now. Do you expect higher costs later on with more visitors coming in and more active traffic?

Truth be told, I have no idea how much it costs to maintain such a site. Though I have a site of my own (www.embraceyourexperience.com), the monthly server costs amount to barely anything (probably around 10$ per month), but I have no idea how much a project and servers for something the size of SaidIt cost. To be fair, I also have no estimation of how much Reddit costs - years ago it was supposedly 33K per month, but now that amount must have increased greatly.

How is it possible that SaidIt costs are so low? And are you expecting the cost to increase any time soon?

We're fortunate in our choice of code- the old reddit source code is highly optimized and built to scale. It's been no easy feat though, and we're still learning how to configure everything and split onto multiple servers over 2 years into this project. They left no instructions for how to run it properly.

I want to raise our costs by $10 or $20 in the near future, to be properly scaled, but hopefully after that our costs only rise predictably with traffic increases. But yeah magnora and I will debate for hours over spending $5/mo, that is the key.

Yes our costs will continue to go up as we need more servers, and we will need more servers as we get more traffic. The hope is donations will also scale at the same rate.

Our costs are so low because we have no expenses other than server costs. And we've spent a LOT of time making sure we're running on the cheapest plan that can actually support us. We hit RAM limitations before and had to upgrade. And then we hit CPU limitations and had to upgrade again. But those are our only two forced upgrades since we started. When we started it was like $30/mo though.

Yes this is pretty epic.My favourite thing about this site is everyone can clone the code and run their own reddit-like site.I will definitely donate when I am back in my job.

Yeah me too! It's a real tool for everyone to use, and we've tried hard to make everything easy to access and set up, so people have a much easier time than we had trying to revive the old reddit open source code.

You should set up a system that mocks reddit's gilding system by having a day where random posts and comments will appear gilded. Bonus points if its all different posts/comments every refresh.
