Congratulations.

Thanks, but I'm mostly proud of the community that has formed. Without all the people like yourself who signed up and participated, saidit would just be me and d3rr talking to each other!

Are you able to say roughly how much the active user base has grown this year for example?

[–]magnora7[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Maybe 50-70% growth? If I had to guess?

A year ago we were still a bit worried about not having enough content, and not having enough active members. Now we don't have that worry anymore, so it's moving in a good direction.

We're ranked #9,621 in the US today and #43,950 globally. Saidit just keeps growing and growing!

And look at the growth in google searches for the term "saidit": https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2018-05-09%202020-06-09&geo=US&q=saidit

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 4 fun5 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

nice trend!

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

Very nice. I would like to inquire as to how this site is facing the growing cost of the increased traffic? I haven't seen any advertising or anything like that. Do you have plans to deal with the financial aspect of your site?

[–]magnora7[S] 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Yeah we're funded by donations and our donations basically match our expenditures, and we work hard to keep that number low. There's donations links in the footer if anyone is interested in helping. That's how we're able to not have ads, and avoid bad incentives

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Ah, yes. Never noticed those before. Thank you.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No problem. We're currently only $9/mo short of covering our expenses through donations

[–]whistlepig 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I'm no expert, but I wonder if a support link in the header might help. Somewhere that it doesn't get in the way, but will at least subconsciously be noticeable and politely remind people how the site funds itself.

I honestly never even thought about this aspect of this site until I read this comment thread. And I don't think I ever scrolled to the bottom before. I think there is a good balance to be had between making it easy to send money and not hitting people over the head with it.

Just sent some BCH.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

We already have a link in the footer... and we advertise it somewhat frequently.

Here's the links for anyone who wants to donate:

https://www.patreon.com/SaidIt

https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/jf/cryptocurrency_support_for_saiditnet/

[–]whistlepig 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

yea... but people don't scroll down far enough to see footers that often.

Top left of the header is a nice empty spot. ;]

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I've said this many times.

I even created an "announcement box" at the top right of my CSS (/s/DecentralizeAllThings/) to put important messages and/or short links to other things, stuff, junk, trivia, and of course donation options.

[–]comments 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

and avoid bad incentives

Well, the money or funding still has to come from somewhere, and if you're reliant on it to survive, wherever it comes from will have that over the site.

I like not having ads, but I'm not sure if this is really a solvable problem.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

wherever it comes from will have that over the site.

To a degree, but if it's distrubted evenly across 12 donors, then no one donor can really call the shots.

Whereas if we have one big angel investor, or one big advertiser, we're basically completely beholden to their wishes.

So I think we've actually made progress on this problem.

I wish I could take credit, but I just got here. Let's make news agregators great again!

[–]Chipit 3 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

Problem is, this only counts people who have the Alexa toolbar installed. And that thing is fricken' spyware. So I'm not sure how credible the numbers are, or if this is even a good thing. Maybe it just means the site attracts people who voluntarily install spyware in their browsers.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Congrats

Wow! Who knew saidit was gettin' so fayuncy!

[–]undeadchipmunk 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (10 children)

Alexa, where the fuck did I leave my keys this time?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

Hah it's a different Alexa than the amazon device

[–]ManWithABanana 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I was wondering how I could browse Saidit on Alexa. Would be weird.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What's funny is apparently this Alexa is also owned by Amazon? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Internet

[–]undeadchipmunk 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

damn, now how am i gonna find my keys?

[–]comments 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

why the same name? I just noticed that.

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I think the Alexa ranking thing came first, and Amazon's alexa came second.

[–]comments 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

but why would amazon name it that?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Lol I don't know honestly, it seems like a very bizarre marketing decision to have two completely separate products named the same thing.

Amazon bought the ranking service in 1999: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Internet

And they named the device that in about 2014: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Alexa

So 15 years later, they named their new device after a separate company they already bought, apparently? Seems like an odd choice tbh

[–]comments 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

woah didn't know they owned the Alexa ranking thing. Maybe they're using (or hoping to use) the Alexa device to help rank stuff?

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah I am wondering if it's some way to covertly embed the Alexa ranking toolbar inside the Alexa voice chat system. Technically they disclosed Alexa is in there, just not which Alexa...

Or it could just be that someone high-up in Amazon really liked the name Alexa.

[–]MassTooter 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

1 million visitors a month per https://www.similarweb.com/website/saidit.net

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for that

[–]VantaFount 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Do you have a rough idea how many active members we have these days?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not sure how you'd define "active member" exactly, but if we were to count all the usernames that have posted a comment or thread in the last month, I'd guess it's about 5,000 different members. I don't really have good metrics to measure that though, so that's just a guess.

We get about 650 posts a day and 2200 comments a day, or so.

Either SaidIt was down again or I was blocked again for 8 hours it seems. Please adjust the settings or consider making a white list to sign up for or something.

I was active though, and added some stats to the article and learned about making graphs (very glitchy and hopefully will get tweaked by IG admins): https://infogalactic.com/info/SaidIt#Size_and_trends

If you have back-dated data about the Alexa stats or whatever I'd love to add that to what little I've collected there. No rush of course. In fact Sept or Oct might be better - and at that point I intend to mirror my IG content onto WikiSpooks too.

Yes our distributed donation system seems to work well so far, plus our expenses are kept very low. Combined it keeps us from being financially desperate, which helps keep the content from being manipulated by outside parties.
