I'm guessing you can do it for cheaper to start out. Last I heard they have two servers for reasons, and have moved around a couple times for security and DDoS attack defense.

" What if there were a bunch of SaidIt clones? What if we could post and read between them fairly easily where it's appropriate? "

It sounds like you mean decentralized and federated. SaidIt and /u/go1dfish of NotABug.io are working on that, or maybe they're already federated, according to the List of Active Saidit Alternatives 2.0 in /s/SaiditAlternatives. I know both are old-Reddit open-source forks, but I have no idea how similar or different they are.

/u/magnora7 may answer but /u/d3rr may be busy for a while, but now this comment is in their messages too, so they'll get to your query eventually.

I don't know if you might find anything useful in /s/DecentralizeAllThings/, but you might in /s/DecentralizeAllThings/wiki/. If you do set an instance up it would be nice of you to make notes and share them, perhaps on a wiki page for future reference and folks to contribute to.

You might also like to keep up on SaidIt subs with this multisub that you can copy to your own profile and customize: /u/JasonCarswell/m/saidit_saidit

Thank you for the reply!

Thank you for the reminder that notes are helpful for others too. I guess it's a kind of trail that others can follow more easily afterwards, even if it isn't the only way.

It's doable. 3-4 other people have done it. Here's our start guide if you want to read how it works: https://github.com/libertysoft3/saidit

If you knew exactly what you were doing, you could set it up in about an hour from scratch (including installing the OS). But if it's your first time trying something like this it might take a few days of work to connect all the dots. Let me know if you need help with it.

I didn't realize other people had made SaidIt clones! Thank you for the getting started info.

No problem. Let me know if you get stuck or need any other help.

Well I don't know if I'm going to do it, I'm just sortof casually exploring the option right now... SaidIt is well-put-together though it seems, it's kindof mind-boggling that I could just have my own SaidIt if I wanted to, I'd just have to download and set it up.

I didn't expect the admins to offer any kind of support getting the software set up somewhere else, so I really appreciate the offer to answer (reasonable, I assume) questions if I decide to try it. Thank you.

No problem. Both d3rr and I are really in to making saidit easy to install (it's waaay easier than the reddit open source to get running) and we're big about open source and helping more alternatives open up so more info is available for everyone.

Good question, the other answers are from users I have blocked.

Lets look into this some more.

-dig saidit.net

saidit.net. 300 IN A 104.18.56.8

whois 104.18.56.8

NetRange: 104.16.0.0 - 104.31.255.255 CIDR: 104.16.0.0/12 NetName: CLOUDFLARENET

Because it is behind cdn, we dont know where else it is really hosted, could be aws, azure, any of the major state-aligned cloud providers. (i call the cloud the fart though, there is much more to cloud hosting than clouds)

Next questions are, how much disk storage does this site use?

What is the monthly trend?

What is the monthly bandwidth? Per user?

Without cloudflare though, any advanced persistent threat can ddos your thing and take it down. The same thing that makes it possible to host your own site on your own infrastructure makes it possible for them to ddos you and force you back onto it.

This is the dilemma, and why .onion routing, but fact is any other site that went viral will be attacked by the mainsream operators, covertly, because they do not want competition.

This is also why at the moment archive.is is being hit with spam, ddos, legal attacks, because that is what an archive server by definition does, it becomes mainstream, because everyone needs it.

A difficult problem, some say the entire internet has a flawed design at the outset, and the internet that we know is based upon those flaws, and the success of things like facegag is due to exploitation of flaws, not because of the awesome engineering of the internet.

Easy to create, yes, easy to scale, no.

And for even asking this question, welcome to the categorization as a thought criminal, someone thinks you have had too much to think! So stay frosty. Read my work for other tips while you still can, and backup everything locally you think might be difficult to keep online due to the powerful interests that will be annoyed by it.

Good news though about powerful interests, they move slowly. Bad news though, they carry a big stick.

LOL. You blocked me?

I guess you didn't get the note I put your book on my shopping list.

Also your post makes little sense related to the OP. Is it a response to something else by accident?

        Nice backhand.

Directing quality professional 3D computer animation also tends to be above most people's abilities too, but I won't backhand anyone, because I know most folks won't have the time nor inclination to delve in and study the fundamental basics up to the complexities and intricate nuances, whether they are capable or not.

The Nobel Prizes, like the Oscars, are very political and even then are still not what they seem, however, if you mean to say of a high caliber I get your drift. I too have been working on and off for the last 19 years on my epic cautionary tale to make a profound difference - but I'm easily distracted from my long term project.

I like the sound of a legit trading company worthy of competing with the corrupt global corporatocracy, though in my mind I can only see that happening via decentralization, open source, and transparency - for the most part.

Good luck with your venture. If you strike it big maybe you can donate to SaidIt, and maybe me if you like my story that I aim to finally openly share a first draft of before September.

I agree that SaidIt has no shortage of ways to be improved, like anything. I've made countless suggestions and lists, but there are only 2 admins here and I'm not one of them. I don't code, I don't do Reddit, and I don't run SaidIt.

Conspiracies are not limited to Hollywood media. Their full spectrum dominance entire hierarchy is a matrix of rigged systems for ruling class and their complete control under their monopoly on violence, psyops, propaganda, and 5th generation warfare. If you can't see how rigged the system is, then you'll always be their slave.

If you're such a big player, why are you wasting time here on SaidIt "with five or six other people"?

regarding saidit and it's way of presenting the various conspiracies is that it seems that you deliver information overload.

I couldn't agree more. I also feel like they had a golden opportunity that was lost over a year ago: to lay down some rules about creating new subs, organizing them with intention, and even the nitty-gritty nomenclature. Tildes is very organized. Organizing the topics and communities certainly wouldn't have solved the incoming torrent of info, but might have helped on many levels. Granted, I came from Wikipedia where they over do their obsessive organizing and censorship, but there has to be a happy medium somewhere.

As far as curation goes, there really is none. Each topic, community, and/or conspiracy theory might do with some fundamental introductions, organization, etc to guide noobies, normies, etc. That's a lot of work, not to mention volunteer work - and most here came to read or rant. I recently posted in a private club an expansive secondary filtration idea that could help better steer SaidIt's top posts (leaving the rest to continue as they like) but it got zero notice, not surprisingly. Thus, I no longer have hope for "elevating" SaidIt's direction via a white hat community.

Mob rules here, and I blame that on the deeply ingrained Reddit culture that spills over here, the admins limited resources and unwillingness to create a "new and improved" different culture, and of course all the Reddit refugees who simply want more of the same without censorship, the majority of who'd likely not care to learn new rules/guides.

May 22 is 10 years for WikiSpooks where I also intend to spend more time and dev projects (more distractions).

              "For the most part".

Unless you have a miracle David to compete with the big boys and their Goliaths, you'll need an army of the masses who will need to trust you to build your competing alternative system that could outgrow the extant status quo rigged system.

Anything less won't succeed or will simply be folded into their establishment sooner or later.

If you are a legit threat your life will also be at risk. MANY alternative solutions have be crushed across ALL fields of life. I'm sharing my content openly, in part for this reason, among a myriad of others. Another obvious example is copyrights. I won't have an army of lawyers to prevent a corporation from crushing me should they try to rip me off - but I can prove I did it first if I do it openly.
