Thanks for the welcome. I just signed up. I did so because I love the reddit software, and further appreciate that you have remove the notorious downvote, which I believe poisons the positive sense of community.

I want to comment on the capcha hurdle that one must clear before signing up. It took me maybe ten different capcha before I was given one I could discern. My eyes are not that bad, though I am sensitive to eyestrain. I began to wonder if you actually want people to sign up. It was that bad. I came here with the thought of possibly starting a Lyme disease support community, but I don't think I can expect people, especially those with neurological challenges, to overcome that hurdle as I finally did.

I hope you will consider what I'm saying here. And in any case, glad to be here. Be well.

EDIT: I just attempted to post to a sub, and was confronted again with an impossible capcha. This is stunning. I simply will not be able to participate here. Shame. The site holds so much promise.

Thanks for the feedback, glad to have you here. /u/d3rr is the one to talk to about the captchas. We had to make them difficult to prevent bot-registration which was becoming a problem, but it obviously shouldn't prevent normal users from signing up either, ideally.

The captchas go away after your account is a certain age. Are they really that bad?

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. Yes, they really are that bad, the worst I've seen. I'm 71, maybe that's a factor, though I don't consider my eyesight bad. But Lyme does affect nerve sensitivity. But when I saw it was required even to post, not only can I not continue doing that, I can't ask anyone else to join and go through it.

Thanks for your feedback, what exactly was hard about it? Was it that regular letters were hard to identify, or was it that there were characters other than letters and numbers? We're working on improving it, but we have to have it a certain level of difficulty to keep this messageboard from being overwhelmed by bad actors, and we're still trying to find a good balance.

Which captcha doflips is the site using now? At this point, I wonder if some of the programs created to solve them are better than actual people. The sliding ones over on 4chan are rage inducing sometimes.

I think it was a combination, of the characters being distorted, having fuzzy outlines, and being gray on gray. I can appreciate the dilemma you face. One possible help would be the user ability to generate a new capcha if the present one is not workable. Other than that, I don't know how serious the bot challenge you're up against is, or how advanced the bots are these days. I've seen math problems used as a verifier; they are simple, but I guess a screenreader could solve them.

the captchas have been updated. you are right, they were too intense/insane.

once you get enough karma/points here, it will stop asking you to do the captcha. thanks for checking out saidit.

Thanks. Much appreciated. I did retry my first thread last evening, and the capcha had disappeared. So I guess I attained tenure!

Be well.

I'm happy to tone them down a bit. But this is only the 3rd negative feedback I've heard in 1.75 months since captcha was changed.

Personally I've heard about 5 different people. I hate to potentially add more bot/shill activity by lowering the bar to entry, but it does unfortunately seem to be deterring actual legitimate users and limiting our growth.

Or maybe we could keep it the same difficulty, but remove it for posts, and only have it for registration. I'm not sure, but it does need to be more accessible it seems. I'll let you decide what is best

the saidit captcha is easier now. i feel okay doing that because the cloudflare one is layered on top of that, for the first time registration case at least.

Sweet, nice update.

Hi we just updated the captcha system, so please invite your friends as signing up for an account should be easier, and the first couple posts should be easier too and then after that the captcha will go away. Cheers

I noticed that. Much much better. Thanks a lot.
