Saidit.net - State of the website - 5/24/2018 - Updated comment score display, 'controversial' renamed to 'funny'

Hi everyone,

We added some new functionality (mostly thanks to /u/d3rr) that now shows the individual funny and insightful vote counts on user comments, instead of it showing only "points". This gives more info to the reader, and will also help with sorting the funny from the insightful.

Comment scores now appear like this:

2 insightful - 0 funny - an hour ago

We also solved some issues with the IRC chat acting up, and we renewed our SSL certificate.

We also changed over the sorting algorithm 'controversial' to 'funny' to better reflect our voting system. We will be re-working the algorithm for funny sorting over the coming weeks to make it best reflect the voting system. This applies for both the post sorting and comment sorting.

Finally it's been great to see the way things look with the new home page, it's a lot more focused on the type of content that we'd like to see here.

As for the future, we're thinking about having a town hall sort of activity where we would focus on one specific topic and put it at the top of the site and have a good day of site-wide focused discussion about it. Would there be interest in this?

Why not make mod logs public by default. Make it so that mods have to leave a stickied comment with reason for removal for every removal, including comments.

Transparency with moderation is essential in subs (what are they called here? /s/'s) that have a tight knit community or that need to have trustworthy mods due to a sub facilitating financial transactions.

I moderate a moderate sized drug community on reddit and everytime we remove a post we leave a comment as to why. We do this using macros from the toolbox, which is an amazing mod feature that also helps you keep track of certain users that may be causing problems or the like with notes that only the mods can see.

That's interesting about the toolbox macros. Are those a RES feature or just something innate to the reddit mod interface?

It is another chrome extension all on it's own and is super nice. I will PM you some screen shots of what it looks like in a 50k user sub and the tools it offers, I would just post it, but I don't want who I am on blast even though a ton of people know me and the subs I mod.

I love it. We've got to solve the biased mod takeover problem somehow. I also like the idea of forced mod rotation for big subs.

Yep term limits and some kind of easy way to hold a vote which bots can't easily game (must comment to vote, must be an active user for the vote to count, etc.). Maybe the election code automatically assigns new moderators too, to avoid the shenanigans that went on in r/conspiracy with their "algorithm".

Yeah mod elections are not good, perhaps we could have a lottery mod system? Or maybe instead of term limits we could have a way to vote mods out?

I like the idea of mod turnover (I think), but I'm not sure the best way to do it yet.

Yeah a lottery would work. Voting mods out might be an even better solution than term limits, I like it.

I've seen a bunch of ideas that are replacements for mods, but not much about fixing bad actor mods within the reddit model. Hopefully we'll get big enough to need to worry about it.

I like everything so far. Thought I'd dislike the "funny" designation instead of a sign of disapproval, but I kind of like the good vibe of it as a direction forward. Hope you can keep all the good and great things about Reddit and not the bad things.

How Reddit Was Destroyed

Topics would be interesting concepts. Always hesitant to have too much top down control of things, such as the use of stickies in popular subreddits, but especially at the beginning of this site it could set a good tone for the culture desired.

That's good idea, but I feel like my brain would just interpret that as upvotes and downvotes because that's how I'm used to seeing those displayed
