Getting away from the upvote/downvote paradigm is a great idea and it's still early enough in this net community's lifespan to get people to use it that way

I dig 1, I've thought of that too. As long as it doesn't look terrible, that'd be a clear indicator that this isn't up and down voting.

Even here? I see most people using this appropriately here, aside from insightful voting everything that they fun vote. So funny things are always voted insightful even when they're not.

Yeah we can try 1, I'm down. The only thing is the numbers will be below each button, so the numbers may run in to each other a bit sometimes. Also in the comments, it will be much wider than the current voting button layout, with nothing below the side-by-side buttons. Maybe the comment text could be re-arranged to move more to the left to sit under the buttons, so the voting buttons and username are all on the same line?

It'd be a little extra work, but a potential solution is just hide the point total number until you mouseover. This would have the added bonus of getting people to vote more independently. Plenty of people including myself see something that's highly upvoted and are more inclined to upvote for that reason alone. And vice-versa for things without a lot of points next to it.

That sounds like a winner for comments. I don't think we want to make the button area any wider on comments and impact the indent spacing stuff.

I guess you see what's going on in the database so you know for a fact whether or not other people are using it as a downvote. I'm just saying, why invite the connection? You could use some other neutral object like a balloon emoji.

Did you understand what I was referencing in 2? I kind of turned it into a joke so I hope it wasn't confusing.

We can't see that in the database, we still don't know why they clicked it.

I like it. Yeah your 3 makes a lot of sense but we need some suggestions. This balloon thing sounds alright. Maybe a party hat?

Yes. The way it is now with the "username (karma)" in the header on every stinking page is pretty obnoxious now that you point it out.
