and 'restricted' also counts as public?

yep. restricted (included in /s/all) controls a property called 'discoverable' only.

/u/Pyramids So to sum it up:

  • a sub marked NSFW/over 18 does what you want: No new accounts are subscribed to it while still being 'public'. This option is found in subsettings which will become apparant when you create one.

  • making your sub private also, but this means you have to invite peeps, not really what you want.

  • a restricted sub gets auto subscribed (unless the NSFW/over 18 option is enabled)

  • the option I said above does still makes new acounts auto-sub, your sub contributions just doesn't show up in /s/all
