Holy shit I think saidit might revive IRC back from the dead (if saidit gets more popular). Thanks for opening it up to external servers.

Whats the 3rd server for? Just a backup?

[–]Vexems 10 insightful - 3 fun10 insightful - 2 fun11 insightful - 3 fun -  (14 children)

Seems to me the site has been rejuvenated lately. I wonder why.

[–][deleted] 16 insightful - 3 fun16 insightful - 2 fun17 insightful - 3 fun -  (13 children)

Lots of people moved here from reddit, especially the ice poseidon guys. More attention and users = more improvements

[–]magnora7[S] 13 insightful - 3 fun13 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 3 fun -  (10 children)

That, and also the recent hack made us have to re-evaluate some design choices, which got us making other changes too.

[–]send_nasty_stuff 8 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 3 fun -  (9 children)

Can we get rid of the auto subbing now?

[–]magnora7[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (8 children)

Yeah it's coming soon, couple weeks at most. It will only affect new user accounts though. If you wish to unsubscribe from all subs and create your own list, there is an 'unsubscribe from all' button in the user preferences, and also a setting to set your home page to 'subscribed'. This will make it similar to reddit. But we're probably going to make this the default setup for new users in about a week.

Please don't do this. Please implement sub muting first. Part of the joy of Saidit is new stuff on home.

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Change your front page to 'subscribed' in your user preferences and then unsubscribe from the subs you dislike

[–]bobbobbybob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I already unsubscribed from everything and subscribed to a few so that I can just see those on my subscribed tab,

What you are suggesting makes the home and subscribed tabs the same. Which isn't the idea.

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, but it solves the problem for you until we actually switch things over, which may be a couple weeks because we are doing our new server setup first

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Also as it is, 'home' is just /all with /s/ads removed (which no one uses) so you aren't losing much by losing 'home'. We are going to rework this system now that saidit is big enough, we'll probably do away with 'home' altogether and just have 'all' and then 'subscribed' as the default main page.

There is the main server, which has most everything.

Then there is the irc server, which will be at irc.saidit.net

Then 3rd server will act as a proxy server for the main server for media content. It will also host thelounge, which is our IRC chat software that runs in-page

This will protect us by compartmentalizing the different functions, as well as providing necessary proxy services which mask our IP.

We'd love to help IRC make a comeback.

Thanks for the explanation.

[–]magnora7[S] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

No problem, d3rr and I just spent the last hour outlining this design and we think it's a good one

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Does saidit support image hosting?

Also wouldnt it be cool if saidit could crawl image links and save them to the 3rd server?

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

We are working on an image upload system that is paired with imgur, but it might be a couple weeks, we've got a lot on our plate right now

[–]bobbobbybob 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

DUDE~!!!!!!

have you not heard of OPSEC?

I seriously hope that you are lying as misdirection. You don't tell people your backend config in a public channel. You've just handed the next bad actor a script.

[–]magnora7[S] 8 insightful - 2 fun8 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This level of explanation isn't too revealing, and our users deserve transparency as many of their donations paid for our servers, so they deserve to know what they're paying for.

imagine being such a faggot that you think security through obscurity is a thing. if anything they should publish detailed architectural docs so sec researchers that use the site could evaluate it

[–]bobbobbybob 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

yeah, everyone should reveal all their secrets

[–]Jonwilkon 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

just curious what is the port for irc.saidit.net ? I am use to seeing the port following a : after the server. ex: irc.saidit.net:xxxx

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It doesn't exist yet, but when it does we will announce the port and other settings. Thanks for your patience

[–]gretathroatborg 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

any way to have the main server fully proxied? meaning no clients connecting directly to it for anything. then it can run from a private vlan on non-routable address and the servers that proxy to it (for media and 'most everything') protect it from being open to ddos attacks. how do you mitigate ddos? if not in the networking gear/upstream then the proxy servers will do double duty of regular server job and also rejecting ddos traffic with dynamically updated firewall rules

[–]magnora7[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

This is basically what the new setup will be, more or less

[–]gretathroatborg 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)
