I much prefer this voting system over Reddit's. One of the things that drove me crazy about Reddit was the hive-mind of subs. If your opinion differed from the hive, you were downvoted to oblivion. At Reddit, the popular information was considered the correct information, facts be damned! This caused a lot of people there to believe bad info to be true.

I truly believe sites like Reddit are contributing to a break-down of society because people cannot discern "popular" from "fact." The sci-fi series The Orville did a great episode about this; I think it was Season 1, Episode 7: Majority Rule, where death sentences were determined by how many up and down votes the suspect got instead of a trial.

i understand what youre saying but i still prefer having the downvote button, if you cant handle being downvoted create your own sub with other like minded individuals.

If I had a downvote button, I would have downvoted you for disagreeing with me, and a few other people would, too. Then your comment wouldn't show up at all because it had a negative vote count. It's a good thing that my opinion isn't able to trample your opinion -- not just for this discussion, but it's for the good of society in general that dissenting view points cannot be crushed.

if you downvoted me i would be fine with that, you still saw what i said thats the important part. If people agree with me they would have negated your downvote by upvoting me. You need people to disagree otherwise this whole site is just a huge circle jerk

Counter argue with words instead of a downvote.. if your counter argument is superior and more people agree with you, your counter argument will get more upvotes. Words/comment require logic+articulation.. downvotes only require emotions.

EDIT: Also wanna say what this guy said is so true... i think the fact that every comment/post is a battle between upvotes and downvotes can't help but give people the feeling that popularity is what matters and therefore the popular vote is automatically right.

DIsagreements can ONLY BE KNOWN by the click of a downvote.

No it's not, it allows people to read and see what others are saying without bias. The downvoting was absurd on reddit. A disagreement does not mean we ought to downvote the other person. Counter the points with logic instead.

Downvotes sink your post to the bottom on Reddit. In the Reddit system, initial votes are more important than later votes because that is what determines if your post will rise to the top or sink to the bottom. It is a huge problem; and as we can see many platforms are doing away with downvotes all-together (e.g. Youtube, Facebook).

If needing a downvote button is this important to you, you're more than welcome to start your own reddit clone that has it.

Have you considered that not-voting can be used as a kind of downvote? Stuff with no votes eventually kind of disappears. But yeah, you don't get that little frisson of fake internet satisfaction of having thrown a virtual turd at someone.
