I'm glad the student survived, but fucking hell. Is it any wonder Americans are losing trust in the police when cops can get off scot-free after shooting teenagers? On top of other horrible things, like standing outside a building and doing nothing while a shooting goes on inside? Like enforcing unconstitutional lockdowns and mask mandates? Like taking away people's stuff without a warrant? Like harassing teenagers just because the teen happened to look like the cop's bully from secondary school?

No wonder so many people hate cops.

I'm glad you said this, and you are absolutely right. Incidents like this greatly erode public trust in institutions that are necessary for a functioning society. I don't want people to interpret this as 'fuck the police'. Sociologists have studied this and concluded that societies can only function without dedicated law enforcement at sizes of up to a few hundred people. We are obviously well past that point. Society can also not function with institutions of authority they cannot trust and are not accountable. These problems are by no means limited to policing, but this is an example thats hard to ignore or handwave away

I just want people to take more seriously abuse of power and authority, as it causes serious problems for everyone, including counterproductive responses like 'abolishing' or 'defunding' institutions that are necessary for functioning society.

The kicker is, Joe Average is brainwashed into believing the cops are the GOOD GUYS and will do anything to fight the idea that they might be power-hungry thugs.

We need good cops. In order to have that, we need police academies that include lectures on the constitution. We need cops to be required to go to martial arts at least twice a month so that they know what it's like to get punched and are more humble. We also need cops who meet physical requirements, because a cop who's weak or short is more likely to use weapons, which is more dangerous.

It's like a rehash of the Lee Paige incident, except Paige at least had the decency to only shoot himself.
