The more I research, the more this bothers me. Not a single species of animal in the wild has ever been recorded directly committing suicide out of depression, stress, or anxiety. Not a single of the billions of animals in this world.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_suicide
Not even Lemmings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemming#Misconceptions
Nor Whales or dolphins in the wild, whose strandings are caused by geomagnetic activity and sonar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetacean_stranding
These were both common false examples that officials and religious leaders in ancient societies used to excuse their failures and explain the rates of suicide in their own communities as some sort of natural phenomenon. These have all been disproven.
Since then, those hypocrite figures have changed their tune and are now arguing that animals lack the intelligence or awareness to willingly commit suicide. But this has been proven wrong. Animals DO commit suicide in human captivity such as zoos, some animals on farms, and even some pets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_tarsier#Survival_in_captivity But this happens ONLY under the stresses and effects of human captivity. So they are certainly able to, just for some reason those same species have never in history been seen doing it in the wild.
So how on earth is it possible that millions of humans choose to purposely kill themselves every year? Not only humans, but even ANIMALS when they are in our captivity?
What on earth have we done? What level of evil have we introduced into this world? How did we manage to break the ultimate protective instinct that nature gave us? How did we break this ultimate law of nature? The law of self-preservation?
The answer is so simple. So damn simple.
The answer is: BASIC NEEDS. But not just those that are spoken about. I mean the REAL basic needs.
What does an animal do when they're under stress? When they are anxious? When they are in pain? They run away. What do they do when they are hungry? They go and hunt. herbivorious animals go and browse for food. green plants are everywhere. prey is everywhere. What do they do when they are thirsty? They dip their heads in a stream, river, or a lake. What does an animal do when it is freezing? It goes into a cave or into some bushes or burry. They dig a tunnel, or a home in a tree. What do animals do when they need to poop or pee? They do it right where they're standing. Lonely? They can walk up to any other willing animal and start hanging out together or mating for fun without dressing fancy or buying a car or being rich, or adding names to rental agreements, or having enforced financial responsibilities.
Humans are the ONLY SPECIES that are PHYSICALLY prevented from meeting their own basic needs.
Are you anxious or stressed out and want to run away? Most of us can't. Most of us literally cannot afford to run away. We have a home we need to work and pay bills for. otherwise, we become homeless and cant shower or feel at home anywhere and are heckled everywhere we go. We can't even afford gas to run away very far. we have nowhere to go and we all know this deep down. We are prisoners. Where are we gonna go? Maybe if you are lucky enough to have a relative that will let you stay with them. Yet this is still not "running away" from your circles. Almost every inch of earth has been appropriated by other people and groups already.
Are you hungry? It's against the law to hunt in most areas, and where you are allowed to, you cannot hunt without a license and expensive licensed equipment in most of the world. And just enough limits so you basically can't survive off of it. Pick fruits off trees? Most public places have purposefully removed edible trees and plants from their properties.
Are you thirsty? In most cities and towns, most streams have been either polluted or fenced off and you cannot drink without paying for it.
Are you cold? You may not just walk into some cave or dig a hole or build shelter in most of the world. it is illegal. you need permits, land ownership, rights, licenses.. you cant just build.
Do you need to poop or pee? Good luck. Unless you work, pay rent a home and STAY around your home, you are in trouble, buddy. You cannot pee or poop anywhere in public without risking going to PRISON for indecent exposure or vandalism where you will likely be abused and leave with trauma. There are purposely few free-use public toilets anywhere anymore. And in many parts of the world public toilets are so disgusting, they are practically unusable. And this is by design. This is an underappreciated stress that is totally foreign to animals in the wild.
Are you lonely? You can't just walk up to some willing members of the same or opposite sex and politely ask for a date. Humans have invented unspoken social rules of who you can and cannot even approach or talk to. You could be physically surrounded by hundreds of consensual-age and consensual-minded neighbors, and not be socially allowed to speak to any of them. There are social rules, group exclusivity, cultural taboos, expensive neighborhoods, dating app logarithms, isolated social networking, and other systemic ways to prevent adult humans from having a free unfettered dating choices with other adult humans. Non-selective Dating sites like Craigslist have been taken down. Now you must know-someone to meet-someone. You must meet qualifications, you must have a credit card, you must make equal income, pay same rent, etc etc.... half of the people around you who would otherwise consider having some sort of relationship wit you are automatically made off-limits by soft but systemic social engineering. In some parts of the world this is much worse than in others. they will tell you straight off who you can and can't date based on gender or caste.
You have to buy or rent a home to take a shower.. you have to buy expensive clothes.. you have to have cash for public transport or a car and gasoline to get to it. None of the other great apes have to go through such complex bureaucratic lengths to fill such a basic need. This is not about sex, but pretending that the need for human relationships does not exist is like pretending the need for eating food doesn't exist. This goes for animals in captivity as well. Have you ever tried to buy a single "schooling fish" from a pet store? They will tell you to go F yourself. "3-minimum!" even for measly little fish that live less than a year. Yet we don't even extend this basic needs to humans or other pets and animals in zoos.
If you cannot get your basic needs met, or if you can't even have the relief of knowing that you CAN get your basic needs met with a little work, then suicide starts to feel like a rational option to these individual animals and humans under unsolvable duress.
submission statement: Despite legends and popular belief, suicide from depression or anxiety does not appear to exist in the Wild. This is a uniquely human-created problem.
This is what humans did. We took all of the basic needs that every animal on earth has, and we have systemically made it impossible for humans to get them without playing a whole bunch of complicated society-invented games and becoming subservient to others who were in charge.
Those who were in charge have appropriated every last inch of earth, and have enslaved/appropriated other human lives simply for the right to exist on that inch of earth. Aint nowhere for you to run, kid. Our Fight-or-Flight instict has been denied. We are not allowed to Flight, nor is there a single individual to fight. it's a whole global system at work here. There just is nothing physical to even fight.
Those humans who cannot or will not obey are getting pushed to suicide. Just like that little monkey in a cage.
And then you look back in history and you learn some of the groups with the highest rates of suicide in human history were prisoners and slaves. Actual slaves. From ancient Mesopotamia all the way to modern africa. Why? Again, probably because they felt imprisoned and denied of these basic needs. This really brings it home.
It's really very simple and obvious why humans and human-captive animals have become the only species to purposely and directly commit suicide. We have sadly done this to ourselves. We have broken our very nature and have metaphorically imprisoned our own. No other species of mammal does this. This is very telling.
This tragic problem was CAUSED by humankind, and must be SOLVED BY humankind.
