The main thing this clarifies is that the rate of change has stayed pretty constant overall.

The trouble is that current inflation is also a big problem. Inflation isn't a just a neutral, natural variable. The government has been printing money which makes this look a bit better but eventually that's going to effect the wider economy and start devaluing people's earnings.

Absolutely. Inflation is a tax on everything, and leads to mal-investment. Bubbles everywhere. All the people holding dollar-denominated things (bank savings, annuities, etc.) are hurt by it.
