I was bewildered when I encountered a new social class at Yale: the luxury belief class. Luxury beliefs are opinions that confer status on the rich at very little cost, while taking a toll on the lower class. The affluent have decoupled social status from goods, and re-attached it to beliefs.

So our current mass insanity is the result of some rich kids larping to social signal at their peer in the same way poor folks flex by wasting money on a used Mercedes? It's like the shittier version of when the upper class Brits switched up their tea ritual so they'd poor milk at a different time than poor folks.
