Paranoid schizophrenia is an unpleasant condition. And maybe if he were an atheist, he might have formed the belief that the government or aliens has swapped his baby for a surveillance device.

But with a Christian world view, the step is shorter and more complete. The baby is evil by some demonic or satanic influence. He now has his justifications for the physical abuse of the infant.

That would be my first guess. It's likely the case if he genuinely believes that his child is evil, as he was overheard saying.

But even an psychologist wouldn't diagnose someone based on a newspaper article, and my background is mathematics.

It's certainly plausible that he's a lazy man-child.
