Bermejo and his two friends were detained on suspicion of crimes against Peru's cultural heritage, but it's not the only piece of bad news the 26-year-old received that day as his "spiritual girlfriend" turned out not to be a girl at all.

According to officials, Juanita was, in fact, an adult man who died at around the age of 45, between 600 and 800 years ago.

"It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan," an expert at Peru's Ministry of Culture joked.
